I was just thinking about this.... I am on Prime but I don't know what would happen if I needed medical care while I was OOT or back visiting family etc. (In case I ever get hit by a bus, attacked by a wild animal.. or something crazy
)
Would I still need to call the base clinic and get a referral? Or would I just go into the ER if needed?
Re: Yet Another TriCare ?
I changed my name
Thanks! Apparently I wasn't searching TriCare's website correctly.
ETA: I was hoping I wouldn't have to get a referral because chances are high it will be a holiday. I know our base had an early close on Wes. and still isn't open yet.
If it's an emergency (life, limb, or eyesight), then go to the ER. If it's not an emergency, then call TriCare and they will authorize you to go to someone in your area (could be an urgent care center or other authorized provider). TriCare has a phone number for that, and they staff it 24/7/365.
If you need to go to the ER, just go and call Tricare later.
You should be able to get an after hours referral to urgent care for things that need prompt attention, but aren't life threatening (e.g. a UTI).
I'm on Standard now, but I needed urgent care over Memorial Day weekend when I was AD and had strep throat. I called my MTF's appointment line even though I knew they were closed because I knew there was info on there about what to do. They had a 1-800 number listed in the message for me to call. I called the number and had to leave a message. A triage nurse called me back. She was stupid and tried to tell me I needed to go to the ER. I told her I didn't want to go to the ER for strep throat, and she begrudingly gave me authorization to go to urgent care. I didn't pay a penny.
