Christmas Traditions

Loren & I are looking at different traditions to start with Layla.  I spent my whole life being shuffled back & forth between parents on Holidays that our traditions are all screwed up.  I want to start our own with our kids, but just for funsies... tell me your favorites!

Re: Christmas Traditions

  • Since the year we bought our house (2006) we have said we will be home on Christmas day.  It wasn't even for our kids, but now, I'm glad we started that.  We also have had Chinese for dinner since our very first Christmas dinner together.  MMMM...time to save myself for the rest of the month.  LOL

  • I'm excited to start Elf on a Shelf this year - DH will be forced to play along until Piglet is able to get excited about it.

  • I love that you're doing Elf on a shelf with YH! Mine is not fun enough to play along until DD gets old enough to enjoy it  :( That's one of the ones I want to start too!

This is exactly what we are doing too!!

  • We did a version of Elf on a Shelf - we had little stuffed bears with Christmas hats and scarves on and they hid in a new place each night. We couldn't touch them till Christmas, when they appeared in our stockings.

PJs every Christmas Eve, which we wore that night and to open presents the next morning.

  • Things we do:

    - Massive feast of indulgent foods on Xmas Eve (DH's family tradition)

    -  Eventually hopefully services at church on Xmas Eve (me)

    - Watching 'The Snowman' on DVD before bed (new)

    - I'd like to do one gift opened on Xmas Eve (me) but DH isn't into it

    - Opening stockings first Xmas day (me)

    - Big breakfast Xmas day (DH)

  •  My favorite is taking out our framed pictures of our Christmas years together.  This is our 8th Christmas together, so we have 8 miniature frames, one for each year.  It's fun to see how we've changed over the years.

I have a miniature mitten/stocking advent calendar where there's a candy treat inside daily (DH loves this the best).

I make homemade doughnuts Christmas day.

    New jammies Christmas Eve.

And my family tradition growing up that I won't be continuing is we always exercised before presents.  I think that's a dumb tradition that we won't be doing.

  • I don't have anything set in stone yet, but I'm excited for when the baby gets older! Driving around looking at Christmas lights (Dh and I do this every year already), making some crafts together for him to give grandparents, aunts uncles, etc, watching Christmas movies throughout the month, Baking cookies with him, Making an advent calendar for him to use every year, PJ's on Christmas eve, big breakfast on Christmas day. I'd also like to do something to document each Christmas...not sure how yet. Maybe starting a journal for him or something telling what we did and a recap of the previous year?? Oh and we will not be doing elf on a shelf, because the idea of a doll with a mind of it's own that can move around the house is super creepy to me.  **shudder**
  • I make homemade cinnamon rolls for breakfast on Christmas day. Open presents on Christmas eve because we just can't wait. Sit around on PJs all day and then I make a traditional Acadian meat pie for dinner.

  • Every year we get a new ornament that reflects on that year. We started that when we had our first Xmas.

This year is an exception, but we throw a big party the second week in Dec.

Over Fall we start loading a giant box to take to the animal shelter full of treats and toys and take it to them in Dec. This will be DD's first year and we're pretty excited.

New pj's for Xmas for DD The only gift she can open - this was my family tradition.

Xmas Eve - big GTG at DH's Aunts where lots of little ones are the focus.

Christmas Day is always at our house now that DD has been born. Xmas morning with just us, french toast,  and then in the afternoon everyone trickles in for gifts and dinner.

    I like this idea!

  • My mom always got us kids an ornament every year (So we'd have a bunch when we moved out.), and she still does that.  So I expect to do that for any future offspring of ours...I always thought it was a good idea.

Generally, we're still hammering out the particulars of how we "do Christmas," because Josh is attached to the particularities of how his family did it growing up, but I think some of their things are dumb.  We've only been together for nine Christmases...hopefully we'll work it out eventually.
