holiday decorating question
so i realized that I have way to many ideas (as well as collected decor) for decorating for Christmas... I know it is ultimately my choice and my own taste.. but does my house have to match?
Like I have one theme for my mantle, another for the dining room table and another for the living room and kitchen?
I can't narrow down my ideas haha

I always pretty much stick to the same color scheme. It is normally a variation of red, green (greenery, I don't have much stuff that's actually green), and metallics (gold, silver, and platinumy gold). For the past 2 years, I've just stuck to greenery and metallics. I'll be pulling out the red this year, too, though because a) it is so pretty with our newly painted cabinets and b) my sister's boyfriend's DD is going to be with us for Christmas. She's 4 so I'm going for more festive and less formal.
ETA: Only white lights are allowed in and on my house. We do the tiny white lights inside and C-9's outside.
Almost everything in my house matches, only because I bought it all at the same time the first Xmas after we were married. White lights inside and out, red and silver ornaments on the tree and on the wreath over the fireplace, all mitchy-matchy like in a magazine.
I don't think having everything match exactly is that important, particularly because Xmas decor tends to evolve over the years - meaning, people buy you ornaments as gifts, you may find something super cute that doesn't "go" but you love it too much to pass up, etc. I'm already seeing hints of that in my own decor, and I kind of like it - for example, a blue glass Noah's Ark ornament my mom bought Ian this year, or the handcarved wooden reindeer ornament my ILs brought us from Germany last year. It breaks up the sameness and makes it look more homey, IMO.
My theme is vintage-tacky-garage sale overkill. None of my stuff matches. Do what make's you happy. It's your house!
I see merit in anyones holiday style. You get credit for the effort and the spirit.
I think that everything in the SAME room needs to match and/or coordinate. But I think it's perfectly fine to have a different theme in each room. You can have formal white lights in one room and in the other have a blue white theme.
I use to be an all white lights girl, but now with kids, we went multi color last year outdoors. The big tree is white lights because I still want it to be elegant, but the kids tree is multicolor with blue, pink, and green ornaments.
Exactly this. Do what makes you happy! My decor was always matchy-matchy when I was childless, except for a handful of special childhood ornaments. Now, I want the kids to be able to celebrate and do fun decorations too, so you can guarantee my house will be a hodge podge every year. I love it.

Mine tends to be pretty matchy- all red/white/silver- but I love when I go to other people's homes and they have all different kinds of decorations. Honestly, I feel like being so matchy (for me) is the easy way out. Having variety takes more creativity and patience.
mine is mostly matchy on the inside (red and gold) but i do have a second tree that i decorate with all my mom's/childhood decorations - and have some of my mom's old school decorations around the house.....for the outside, we do old school multi color lights + plain white lights.
so i guess i'm 50/50 on matchy vs. unmatchy

I'm pretty eclectic. I absolutely adore snowmen, so I have a bunch of various snowman stuff, but nothing is "matchy" at all. Everyone has picked out their own stockings over the years, the kids pick out a new ornament for the tree each year, and we still put their little preschool junk on the tree : )
I still have a bunch of those brass engraved ornaments my mom go for me at the mall when I was a kid. Yep. those go on the tree.
DS loved the nutcracker I bought one year-- so much that he didn't want to put it away, and slept with it on his shelf by the bed that whole year until the following Christmas.
I would never be able to pick a theme. I love it all!

Mine is mis-matched. It feels more homey to me when it's a collection of decorations bought/received/made over the years rather than sticking to themes...

Ditto. Until this year we would only do white lights outside, but this year we added some multi-colored lights to line the yard and Evan LOVES them. We are also considering a yard ornament because he is obssesed with the one in our neighbor's yard. It is a fun time for him and seeing him light up and enjoy all of the color and lights is way more important to me than having my picture perfect designer Christmas decore.

I have an angel one! All my siblings do. I even have my construction paper ornaments I made in elementary and brownies. All that noise goes on the tree. I feel guilty packing them back up. They have waited all year to shine, cause you know, ornaments are real, like Toy Story.
My parents' tree is full of that stuff. poster board angel with glitter and my kindergarten photo cut out on the head, a peanut in a shell glued to some burlap with a face as baby Jesus. That's one old peanut! Yes, my mom has accumulated many nice ornaments over the years, but those still come out!
Our tree is mish mash and always will be. The handmade ornaments a family friend made for my brother and I every year (I have mine, he has his) Auburn ornaments, ones from rrr's employer, a hallmark monkey from Kasey, and so much more. I can't wait to start adding our kids' handmade ornaments!
