how do you usually finish seams?

I've been a spoiled girl for way too long.  I got a serger for my sweet 16 and used the serger in the home ec room before that...so finishing seams has always been a piece of cake.  But, it's in the shop now for repairs...so all I have is a sewing machine.  I can't remember how I used to finish seams. I made a homemade boppy for a friend and a boppy cover.  How would you finish the seams on the cover?

Re: how do you usually finish seams?

  • Oh, serge, all the way- I hated finishing seams with a zig-zag. I used an overcast foot for a few weeks with my sm, but, it took SO long compared to serging. It did look better than a plain old zig-zag, though. On a Boppy cover, I might be tempted to just use some bias tape to bind them, though- I washed ours SO much and we had a bunch. They were always getting spit up on, drooled on, diaper explosions- ugh. :)

I've never had a serger, never even touched one, but I use the overcasting on my SM, I love it.  I probably use the overcasting more than any other stitch (probably even more than my straight stitch.

  • On curved seams like that it's more difficult but I prefer french seams.  You can always try bias binding the seam, that will work with curved seams like a Boppy.  You can do this with or without a bias binding foot.  Good luck!
  • For the curved seams I would use bias tape. For clothing I use french seams.
