Heading to Brussels next week...

Hiya!

DH and I are heading to Brussels next Thursday night for 4 nights. We're meeting up with his sister and her fiance who are in town from the states for a conference. Any recommendations? I can't remember who is in Brussels (do we still have a list somewhere?) but would love to maybe meet up or a coffee if anyone is in town!

This trip is really more for his family since we can travel whenever we want so we have Friday in Brussels, heading to Bruges for the day on Saturday and then we have Sunday to ourselves as they are heading back to the states that day. We are planning to find somewhere to maybe watch some American football that evening (don't judge! We can't do that here.) plus whatever during the day. If anyone knows of any can't miss restaurants both DH and his sister are pretty into food!

Thanks :-)

Re: Heading to Brussels next week...

  • Hey! I'm in Brussels! But we're planning a weekend away for our anniversary next week...

I'll be back with some restaurant recs but I can already tell you a likely place to watch American football is Fat Boys on place du luxembourg, in front of the EP: http://www.fatboys-be.com/

  • Oh awesome! With a bit of luck, they'll be showing the game we'd love to see!

Shame you'll be out of town though, I've had some random Int'l Nestie GTGs in Stockholm and Tokyo and it's always fun!

  • Here's a few recs:

Typically belgian food but no tourist trap - http://www.spinnekopke.be/

For moules/frites, got to pretty much any restaurant along the canal at place sainte catherine. Avoid all the places in (petite) rue des bouchers as a rule.

    Also good: http://www.switchrestofood.be/Switchrestofood/home_fr.html

For the decor more than the food (though again, perfectly nice brasserie style): http://www.belgaqueen.be/home.asp?city=1&Lang=1

Taster menu of fusion type food: http://www.restopointbar.be/

Not local (Ethiopian) but yummy: http://www.kokob.be/

Also not local (Moroccan), also yummy: http://www.lakasbah.be/

FYI, the christmas market should be on now at place Sainte Catherine (very close to Kokob/la Kasbah/Belga Queen) and the christmas tree is up on grand place - always looks nice - esp. at night.

  • Totally butting in - we are taking our 3.5 year old son there in a few weeks for the Christmas market (and Antwerp), any suggestions on kid friendly restaurants? Or are most kid friendly? I don't mean with like toys and games just rather that it is acceptable to bring him in?

I've watched American football at Golf Tavern (Bruntsfield I believe) on Sunday nights before, and have heard they show it at the Pear Tree (near the main uni library/campus).

  • frlcb - Most of the above are fine with kids, I'd just avoid Point bar & la Kasbah.

I wouldn't call Kokob a family place per say (it's a bit trendy/arty) but your son would probably enjoy eating with his hands... no cutlery there.

Also as the xmas market is held on place sainte catherine, I'd expect a lot of families around there at this time of year.

  • Hi PittPurple, thanks for the invite to meet up. We have plans next weekend, or we would totally be there! I'm based in Belgium too. We were just in Brussels gawking at the Xmas market this past Saturday, and doing some shopping. The Xmas market is really nice. I think you will enjoy it, especially on the Grand Place where the Xmas tree is. I think once an hour at night they do a big light show to music.

Whenever we have family in town, we take them here in Brussels - Le Grande Porte. It's a local Belgian restaurant that serves Belgian style cuisine. It's a bit of a walk from the Grand Place, but it is delicious and so worth it. I like the Flemmish stew or any meat marinated in the beer, http://www.frommers.com/destinations/brussels/D52474.html

If you drive though, be sure to get your car OUT of the parking lot before the restaurant closes. We ended up having to spend the night and we wasted a whole Saturday in Brussels b/c our car was locked in the lot! We had to wait until 6pm for the restaurant to re-open and free us! haha

For the main sights, be sure to check out the famous peeing boy statue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis ; the Grand Place/Grote Market (main square); the Delerium bar for a beer - I recommend the downstairs over the upstairs of the bar; and across from Delerium the Jannaken piss (girl peeing statue). Somewhere there is a dog peeing statue too, but I have only seen it once and could not even begin to tell you where it is...

Visit a bunch of chocolate shops - we think Leonidas is the best "bang for your buck" and Neuhaus is actually the yummiest! On the Grand Place there is the first ever Godiva shop.

Also visit beer shops to see all the different varieties. We recently discovered the Bier Temple. It's pretty cool http://www.biertempel.be/page.asp?docid=53663&langue=EN  We stocked up on a bunch of Christmas ale this weekend :)

Hope you have a fantastic visit to Brussels!

We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!
