How do you do it? Do you rent a machine from the store, have your own machine or hire a company? My carpets need a good cleaning.
thanks very much
Re: Carpet Cleaning
We just bought a fully-carpeted house and did a combo of renting a machine and hiring a company.
We rented a machine from Home Depot. It was $25 a day, and I needed probably $30 more in cleaner for the three rooms we cleaned with that. The carpets looked great afterword. My dad even got out a stain in one room that was likely red wine. I can't speak to how easy it is to use the machine -- my father actually did the cleaning.
I hired a company to come do the 2 rooms that had major stains all over (I thought it was ink). I used Zero Rez, which just uses hot water (no chemicals) if that's a concern for you. Every stain came out easily. In my area, they had a special for three rooms for $119, but there was an extra $30 charge for any room over 200 square feet, an extra charge for the hallway, and he convinced me to do extra rooms ($50). It came to just under $300 in total. But it does look great.
So, just be aware that if you hire a company (any company), they will likely try to upsell you at the time. If not the things they did with me, I've heard they sometimes charge extra to treat stains, which in my house would've added up quickly. I was glad they didn't do that.
I don't see a difference between the carpets cleaned with a rental machine vs. the ones cleaned by the company. They both look great. I think it's just a matter of whether you want to do it yourself to save some money.
