Mary & KCD

Thanks so much for all the tips on areas in the Norfolk/VA Beach area.  We are leaving tomorrow, under contract on a house!  We ended up raising our price limit a bit, and found one that we loved in Hickory.  We have been doing things like crazy these 5 days here, but it's been totally worth it.

Also, KCD I think we looked at the new build houses in that development you mentioned.  They have the development in front of it that is basically the projects, which are supposedly in the process of getting the people moved out and torn down.  They were gorgeous houses, but the HOH fees are $150 a month!  Also, there were things about it that were too similar to renting, which we didn't want.  If we are paying that much money to buy a house, I want to be able to do whatever I want to it.

So anyways, thanks for the advice and tips.  I definitely pulled up the old threads to double check the areas while we were looking!

  • Hickory is a great area! I'm glad you found something.

  • Yay for Hickory!! If I can talk my DH into buying a home in Chesapeake, I think that is where I would opt to live as well.

Interesting to know about the neighborhood off Dominion - my DH would have a shitfit about the HOH fee; plus additional rules? I'm curious about them; I do know that neighborhoods with HOA oftentimes have rules - supposedly they help to maintain the value/desirability of the home and neighborhood. It is actually a pretty common occurrence around here it seems.

  • I just looked up those new builds, and maybe they are different ones since I don't think these were off Dominion.  It looks like they are off Military.  We looked at them our first day there and we were going from house to house with realtor, so I was completely clueless as to where we were.

But our realtor did say that almost all of the new builds and newer developed neighborhoods have HOH fees.  For this development it included maintenance of the front of your home, your fence if anything happened to it, and maintenance of common areas.  Which to me is pointless since you have to cut your backyard anyways, and there really weren't any common areas to maintain.  So I could never justify $150 a month for that.

I understand the point of HOH's, and that they are designed to keep the community looking nice, but if I'm paying that much I want to be able to do whatever I want.  If you want to put a shed up, you have to have it approved, and it has to be the same siding as your house.  You can't do anything to change the appearance of the outside of the house.  It's not that we plan on doing anything crazy, but I want the ability to do so if we decide to!

That's pretty much how my DH feels about it. I have mixed feelings. I think it's incredibly annoying that someone can tell me the play-set in my backyard has to be the wood constructed variety instead of a metal or plastic construction. But it's nice to know that my neighbor cannot decide to turn their yard into a junk yard.

  • Yeah I'm kind of torn on them too for the reasons you said.  I wouldn't mind the fees so much if they were under like $100, and included a pool or gym or something.  But basically paying $150 a month for someone to cut my front lawn when I still have to cut the back is outrageous to me.

Yeah, I'm definitely going to have to agree with that.
