DSLR Ladies

Would you mind sharing which type of camera you have? Pros? Cons?

I'm looking into possibly upgrading from something my parents bought me a while ago and love the images you all are taking.  I'm looking for something relatively idiot proof, but an option to manually focus.

And go....

Please and thank you.

Re: DSLR Ladies

  • I have the Nikon D3000 with the standard 18-55mm lens and I also have a 50mm lens. I love everything about it, except the inability to have a 50mm lens that auto-focuses. I think you will have good luck with anything by Canon or Nikon, it just depends on which you like better!

Does this mean I'd be manually focusing everything?

Yes. It's annoying, and I haven't mastered it with a moving subject. The Canon allows you to auto-focus with a 50mm.

  • I have the Nikon D5100, which was an upgrade from my D3000. I LOVE it. It has HD video capabilities, a "swivel" display screen (with live-view, something the D3000 didn't have), and a lot more 'effects and settings' for "auto" settings.

I rarely use the 'live view' mode, as I feel you get better pictures shooting through the view-finder. I'm also trying to shoot more in manual settings, but the extra 'auto' settings are great on the D5100.

I have the kit 18-55 lens, a 50mm lens (manual focus) and a 18-75 lens (by Tamron) that I shoot in ALL THE TIME and LOVE it! It's way faster than the 18-55 and just takes much better shots. The depth of field on this lens is great.

  • I think we are getting a Canon Rebel T3i for our "together" Christmas gift, these is all we're getting for each other besides stockings.

I left the picking out of the camera to JT, he's the expert and he wanted some specific things, like being able to shoot in raw, having good video recording capablitiy and he wanted the flip out screen.  We also have a really nice point and shoot right now and he wanted something that was a big upgrade to that.

  • I have the Nikon D5000 and I love it. Like Amanda's it has the swivel screen which is great in certain applications. But also like Amanda I find I get better shots by looking though the viewfinder.

I have the 18-55 kit lens and the 55-200 lens.

I would suggest going to Best Buy or something and play with them. Like PP said you can't really go wrong with Canon or Nikon.

  • Ditto Paige about just going to the store and playing with them. I ended up just liking the Canon better. I have the Canon Rebel T2i and love it!  It does HD video, too. I can shoot using live view mode, but never do. I love all the options to shoot with besides full manual mode and auto, too.

I have the kit lens and the 55-250 as well. I really want another lens and am thinking of going with a Canon 35mm or the Tamron Amanda has and can't decide.

  • Ditto everything everyone said about the D5000.  Love the HD video capability, love the swivel screen.

I'm not ready to upgrade lenses yet, but I do love my speedlight for an add-on.

I haven't unlocked most of the camera's capabilities, but I'm thrilled with it.  You can pretty much take excellent pictures on the auto settings, although certainly if I knew what I was doing with ISO, shutter speed etc they'd be much better!

I have the same camera. And love it!! I am asking for a new lens for christmas..

  • I have a Canon Rebel T3-- I love it so far. I bought the body from overstock and a 50 mm f1.8 lens from amazon. The only complaint I have is that it takes so long to autofocus so I end up taking most pictures on manual, which is fine, but sometimes I don't get the focus right.

I really would love some sort of zoom lens. The 50mm doesn't zoom.
