My first sewing machine!

So my MIL gave me a sewing machine that she used maybe twice. I'm pretty excited. However, I know very little about sewing (and I am in school to be a home-ec teacher, lol). I obviously need to learn in case I get to teach a sewing class, but I also want to learn so I can make fun stuff for my sisters and nieces (and hopefully my future daughter). What would you recommend me starting with to learn? TIA!

Re: My first sewing machine!

  • Anything with straight lines...aprons, tote bags, blankets, pillows, etc. There are tons of tutorials online, and there's more tips in the FAQs (link in the green box at the top of the forum).

  • Lots of newbie project ideas in the FAQ.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  •  This doesn't help with what to make, but if you wind up having to teach sewing, you should really learn as much as you can about doing things properly, not just sewing something and figuring it out your own way, or learning from people who have done that.  I see a lot of tutorials online for poorly constructed and badly fitted things that make me cringe.   I was very fortunate to have a wonderful, but very picky sewing teacher who gave me an amazing foundation to build on.  She actually wrote a couple of sewing books for schools.

Threads Magazine has a really good dvd set of tutorials, that would be a great resource for you.  They have a few tutorials online, but most are previews of what is on the dvd.  I am an experienced sewist, and I have learned a few things from the tutorials online and have considered adding the dvds to my library of resource materials.

Clotilde has a book for basic sewing that is very good...especially for the price.
