Any Hawaii outfit ideas?

We're going to a Mele Kalikimaka luau this Friday. (A friend's annual themed holiday party. This year she's letting us off pretty easy on the theme.)  I can easily wear an Aloha shirt, but am trying to think of anything different.  We often try to be  a bit off center with our outfits.  Last year was 1920s.  We went as Popeye and Olive Oyl since they originated then.  All the conventional flappers and gangsters thought our outfit was a hoot!

Any ideas?

PS:  I try to get my outfits from the Goodwill if I have to purchase one so I'm not wasteful. So bonus points for anything that can be created out of everyday items.

  • i have a t-shirt with that saying on it... and a ukelele.

you know where I live, and work. :)

  • and your H could be Don Ho!

  • I don't know what size you are, but I have a few genuine Hawaiian mu'umu'u (don't ask how many). I lived there for a while and still dance hula and I can loan you one if you want...

Or you could always do a pa'u skirt and top...

Or  you could drape yourself in red fabric, tease your hair, and go as Pele (the volcano/fire goddess).

  • What about a more "touristy" approach?  Loud Hawaiian shirts, big cameras around your neck, fanny pack, socks with sandals...

    LOVE THIS!

I'm trying to think of tv shows set in hawaii that would have a costume-y angle. So far not coming up with something.

It's not exactly cost-effective but I think going as Hawaiian Punch would be hysterical (albeit uncomfortable).
