Let's Talk About BCPs aka Let's talk about my new BF

So now that I have a need to be on a BCP again, I figured I'd consult you ladies to get some insight & recommendations.

I was previously on Yaz, but it made me feel kinda crazy & apparently that hormone isn't good for you. Was on the Patch in college, but it made my legs feel all funny. Was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen as a teen & it also made me crazy. Was on Seasonique right around the time of the wedding, so I'm not sure if the crazy is attributed to the wedding or the pill. Could go either way. Did have some pretty severe cramping about 2 months in & quit that sucker.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

  • I'm on Seasonale (like Seasonique but comes in generic). I do sometimes have bad cramps but it's usually just for a few hours.

Have you looked into an IUD? I was planning to get Mirena but decided against it since we'll be TTC in the next 1-2 years.  I liked the possibility of having very light to no periods over time.

  • I've been on Yaz/random generic 28-day cycle pill. I had awful migraines but im not sure that's something everyone would have to worry about.
  • The last 2 months I was on Generess FE. I like it a lot BUT....my period is 2 weeks late & I'm like clock work. Two tests & some online research later & it seems I have nothing to worry about...but holy hell that can freak you out. It's a lower dose so I thought maybe my body didn't respond to it. Seems like all should be ok though & I'll continue to use it.

  • I'm on a low low dose generic, I can never remember its name. As soon as I get insurance again I'm planning to look into getting an IUD.

  • When I was on BCP's I took Levilte. It is a low dose pill and they only one that didn't make me crazy.

  • I was on Loestrin Fe and loved it. I normally have cramps from hell and they were much better on the Loestrin. My periods were also a lot shorter and lighter.

Does it have to be a pill? I'm going tomorrow to get Implanon. They'll put it in my arm and I won't have to think about it for 3 years.

Because of my past issues with hormonal BC, I'd prefer a not-so-permanent method.

  • Not really sure what you're looking for here. Shouldn't a doctor look at your medical history and recommend a drug that best balances effectiveness/convenience and side effects?

Just looking for other people's experiences. Last doctor I consulted was less than helpful, so I'm hoping the new doctor has more insight.

Hopefully the new doc will help. It really is somewhat futile to ask for others experiences since we all react differently to BC.

So does this mean you have a new man in your life?

You know you have to tell us more now...

  • I took Estrostep way back in the day.
Another old nestie with a new name.
  • Loestrin is the only thing that didn't make me crazy. I haven't been on anything since before B because I hated hormonal BC :(

    LOL! Knew that was coming.

About 2 weeks ago I met him at trivia with some mutual friends. We totally hit it off & made a pretty solid trivia team (always a good sign). We've been to dinner a few times, survived the FL/FSU game (Yes, he's a Gator & I'm a glutton for punishment), he loves my dog... He's funny/witty, charming, sweet, sarcastic, a great kisser.. All good things. Only problem so far is I think he might be too old for me. But I'm just going to roll with it & see what happens.

  • I was wondering why it was important for you to get back on BC, but I was keeping my mouth shut ;)  It's great that you met someone who you enjoy spending time with!  Now, how old is too old?
