So, The House with Good Bones, the one I bore you all about? Well, we had a really hard time buying it. The listing claimed it was "completely updated" which is true if you count 2 cm granite added to each of the bathrooms (I do not). It was originally listed at $110 a foot (ha ha ha ha ha - do you remember that kitchen?) and they then lowered the price to $100 a foot. We made an offer equal to $90 a square foot. So, we got everything negotiated, we were told they were going to take our offer and we put our house on the market. Keeping in mind, our realtor was told by their relator that they were going to sign but they were out of town and couldn't right just then.
Our house sells, we had to be out in 14 days. FOURTEEN DAYS.
Then all hell broke lose. All of a sudden seller's realtor told us that our seller had another offer for full price (the $100 a square foot) and that they were taking that offer. I was in...shock since, at this point, we had 10 days to move out of our existing house. Keeping in mind, the entire house needed to be updated and not just updated but half of it was falling down from termite damage (we did not know this at the time), mold everywhere (again, we weren't aware).....DH was in a bar review class, I didn't know what to do but I knew if we didn't get the house, he would be p!ssed. I offered to match the $100 a square foot. Deal done.
Then, we found out later on the seller's real estate agent LIED TO US about there being other offers. Not to mention, when we started renovating, we figured out pretty quickly they lied to us about termite damage, mold etc.
My point is (sorry, took me awhile to get here): A house near us, also unrenovated, just went on the market for $85 a foot. I am so so soooo p!ssed off at myself that I fell for that stupid lie and I am so p!ssed at how much we overpaid. I am also so p!ssed off at how much undislosed damage there was to the house that WE have had to pay for. Seeing that listing just made me re-frustrated about the entire ordeal.
Re: I am irrationally angry about something that happened years ago.
Ugh. That story sucks so much.
If it helps, I think part of it is just the market now. Houses in my hood are selling for much less per sq foot than I paid for my house 4 1/2 years ago too and it makes me sad and scared (since we want to sell before long) and frustrated too.
That's what I was wondering, was how the inspector missed all that.
I guess what's done is done, right? You love your house, and you wouldn't have changed your decision to buy it, right? Hindsight is always 20/20 - you made a decision with the information you had at hand. Since then, different information has become available, but you can't hold yourself responsible for that, especially if the sellers were flat out lying to you. Shady sellers, for sure.
I think you should just focus on your lovely home, especially that beautiful kitchen!!
I have actually CRIED about this today. I LOVE to find a good deal and I hate that I got ripped off on the thing that costs me the most. I am so frustrated. We don't have any recourse, either, DH looked into it as soon as we found out the seller's relator was bragging around town that he had lied. Norman is so small and he is so stupid. I did have a *small* confrontation with the seller - she came by the house to bring some appliance manuals and apologized for how things went down and I just said "Oh, you mean how your realtor lied to us about other offers? We know that" and she took the h - e - double hockey sticks off.
I sent this wild vent to DH about it and he mentioned our house has a pool, whereas the other house doesn't and the floor space is kind of wacky, very small master bathroom and our floor space is perfect for us, master bedroom is huge, he is right, of course. I am just so annoyed.
On the bright side, a house near us, completely renovated, just went on the market for $120 a foot BUT it is not nearly as nicely done as ours. Not that it matters but I like to watch my unrealized gains (and losses, boo).
What do you mean that's the wrong side? Tastes great to me!
