Where are you when the cleaning lady comes?

So normally I'm too embarrassed by any mess in my house (and too cheap) to have a cleaning service come over to my apartment, I'd rather just do it myself. However, several months ago DH and I thought we'd be moving out of our apartment by the end of the year, so I bought a groupon for house cleaning thinking that I could have them come over once our apartment was empty to do the grunt work while we unpacked at the new place.

Needless to say, we didn't move, and the groupon expires in December. I thought it would still be nice to have the place shined up before holiday guests arrive. However, I've never had cleaners over, other than when my apartment was vacant in the past, so I'm not sure what the etiquette is. Do you watch them? (God that would be weird). Stay at home and do laundry out of the way? Read a book on the porch? Leave the house and run some errands?

Any heads up would be appreciated. Thank you!

Re: Where are you when the cleaning lady comes?

  • hello,

I had cleaners before and if that is their first visit I will be home. I will explain what I expect and notify them of anything they need to know. For me, my shower can be washed with only certain cleaners and so on. Other than that, I will let them clean and stay out of the way. I will not do laundry, just read or something.

Enjoy and I love a clean house!

  • I would plan on being home...esp since it sounds like this will be a one shot thing for you with this particular company.
  • I used to clean houses part time and usually my clients weren't home. If they were home, they'd hang out out of my way or in a room that I didn't have to clean. I knew my clients very well, but if you are going to use a one time cleaning company, I'd stay home just to make sure things are done the way you like.

  • When we used our cleaning lady (who I have known for years), we were always home.

We would stay out of her way, but one of us would still be home for her.

  • I used to nanny for a family that had a cleaning service come over once every 2 weeks. The hours of the cleaning people varied... sometimes I would arrive and they would already be there, or sometimes I'd be with the kids and they just showed up. However, the parents never told me that I had to be present.

Like PPs said - if it's a one-time thing, I'd be home and especially the first time so you can give instructions and answer questions.

  • I am the cleaning lady :) Haha.

My friends who have cleaning ladies purposely leave when they come though.

  • I used to own my own cleaning business. Our regulars were never home when we cleaned. In this case being a one time thing, I would start out at home to greet them, talk about your needs, and then possibly work in the yard or go somewhere while they are cleaning. I would be back within a good time frame to look over the house, thank you, etc. They should be able to give you a close estimate of how long it will take them to complete the job.
