in Trouble in Paradise

One of my college professors who was also a friend, died of stomach cancer on Thanksgiving.  I didn't stay in town for the wake which was tonight, because I couldn't afford to miss work tomorrow, and since it was supposed to be my first time subbing in a kindergarten class, I knew I would need more than 3.5-4 hours of sleep. 

Well, about a half hour ago, the school called me and cancelled both of the days I had scheduled this week.  So now I have no paycheck for this week, and I missed my friend's wake...FML.

    I'm applying for every secretary/administrative assistant position I can find within a 20 mile radius.  I'm trying to avoid going back to working in a grocery store, but it may yet come to that.

    I was wondering because I'm subbing, too. And usually there is like three jobs or so that pop up during the day.

    How does your school board handle subbing?  Are you engaged by the individual schools, or are they all done through the school board?  Here, the individual schools have someone either the principal or the secretary handle calling subs in. Except for a few schools, that have the teachers, individually engage their own subs.  Every school basically has their own pool of substitutes, so there's a lot of competition here.

    The individual districts have a sub pool. There is a web site that posts jobs as they come up. There is a program for my android phone that sends me a message as soon as a job comes in so I can jump right on it. I can only do the one district now though, because all the other ones require you to have your bachelors and I don't officially have mine yet. (Just three more assignments!)

    I am so sorry for the loss of your good friend and about your job. What a kick in the head when you are down. I hope things get better and you are able to find a temp job in the meantime to get over the hump of the holidays. (((hugs)))

    Around here you can be part of an online list of subs. So you can check the night before for any openings and/or you receive a call at 5am for a position that's open.

     

    Sorry about your friend.. and that you're out of a paycheck :-/
