Suzie/ Brianne

Do you ladies have any suggestions for another lens for me? I have the 50mm and I definitely enjoy it. I take all pictures on manual focus because the autofocus is so slow. I want one that will be great to capture DD when she gets more active. DH has a friend that has posted these lenses for sale (75-300mm, 55-250mm & 28-135mm)-- i think two of those are telephoto so maybe not?

Re: Suzie/ Brianne

  • Without knowing the f/stop of any of the lenses, my guess is that you wouldn't want to use any of them. I typically don't buy a lens unless the f/stop is 2.8 or less because I find that anything above 2.8 is really going to limit my abilities to take pictures inside in less than perfect lighting conditions.

I'm assuming your 50mm is a 1.8? If so, the AF likely is a bit slow, but it can also be slow if you are using it in lower light conditions since the camera can't "See" well enough to AF quickly. Does it work quicker when you are using it in bright daylight?

  • I loved my 50 1.8 because it was so fast and sharp.

I bought Suzie's 17-50 2.8 and switch between that and the 50 1.4. Lurrrrvvvv both of those lenses.

Oh, I still miss that baby! I big puffy heart love my 24-70 2.8L, but miss having the wide end. I just need to upgrade my camera and then I'll gain it back. LOL!

  • Thanks Ladies-- I need to play more outside in bright sunlight to see if that makes a difference. I love the lens, I just wish I was quicker at focusing it manually.

Suzie- I dont know the fstops for those lenses...

  • You will likely look at the ring around the glass in the front of the lens and find a 1.8 somewhere in that info (if my memory serves me). I'm guessing it likely cost a lil' bit over $100 when you bought it, which would definitely means it's the 1.8. In the linked photo (below) it shows 1:1.8 and that tells me the f/stop is 1.8.

If you don't understand what f/stop is, this article breaks it down in pretty easy to understand terms although there are tons of other explanations out there if you google f/stop.

No, I know what an FStop is... i just dont know what the fstops for the lenses that I asked about since they aren't mine, someone posted about them for sale and they didn't post that information Smile.

My 50mm is the f1.8 though.

What I really need to do is play around with different lenses to see what I like. Everyone around me seems to have the kit lenses that came with their cameras and I want to skip those. I want to purchase another lens, I just don't know what I want or what a good quality lens is.

  • What are you looking to take pictures of?

What are the typical lighting conditions?

For example, my DH really wants me to buy a 400mm or 600mm lens so he can do more sports. But that likely isn't the kind of lens you'd want. Or maybe it is!

  • I don't have great natural light in my house... but I do have a speedlight (albeit, it's super old) and lots of floor/ table lamps.

I mostly want to take pictures of people and my pets so something that is good with some action. I love manual focus but am too slow for movements so I'd love a good auto-focus with some zoom (but doesn't need to be telephoto). My dad has a telephoto (not sure the range) that I can borrow for right now if need be.

  • I'd get yourself to a brick and mortar camera store and check out what they have in the low zoom range. I still love the Tamron 17-50 2.8 on a crop sensor camera (which I'm sure you have) and they have a model out that has stabilization in it. It was my workhorse for a long time and now it's Shuga's baby. The wide end (17mm) is super convenient in tight quarters while you don't look the zoom. You can use it in fairly low light being that it's a 2.8, but the 1.8 would still be able to carry you when it's too dark for the 2.8.

    Make sense?
