holiday poll - embarrassing holiday stories!

All right! Spill your embarrassing holiday stories, etc. here.

Mine is just kind of silly - I was much older than I care to admit (like my age began with a 3) before I realized that the Santa Claus that Mommy kisses in the song is actually the Dad.

I don't know if I just thought Santa Claus was exempt from being considered adultery or if I just didn't pay attention to the lyrics, but I had a major aha moment when I made the connection.

Is it embarassing that I also never realized that until I just read your post?

Maybe not holiday related but I have lots of stories like that one - "Every Kiss begins with Kay/K"  was one I did not realize has 2 meanings until I was in my late 20's.  Then just lately DH was teaching Maggie about right and left and he said "You write with your right" - wow that would have made my elementary school years a LOT easier and he is even left-handed so it doesn't even apply to him.

  • I cooked my turkey upside down in the roaster on Thanksgiving (as in six days ago)...

My mom called me on Thanksgiving to ask me which side up a turkey needs to cook- I told her breast side up- she asked which side that was and after I explained it had to flip the bird in the roasting pan because she also had been cooking upside down.

    You are not alone!

It was REALLY juicy (though it cooked five hours upside down) - we only figured it out when I was watching my dad carving it and we were all wondering where all the light meat was!  (This is only my third turkey EVER - I'm just glad it was edible).

  • Mine is that I had a holiday party a few years ago where I invited some of my friends and some of DH's friends. I decided it would be fun to do a "Dirty Santa" game where everyone brought a wrapped Christmas ornament to exchange. I asked DH if that was okay and he said yes.

There was only a small turn out so there were probably about 7 ornaments to exchange in the game. At the end, two couples said, "well someone else can have ours because we don't do a Christmas tree." I said, "Really?" and they said "We are Jewish".

I felt so stupid. I was thinking, "yeah, my husband who is a Diversity Consultant for a living could've mentioned this to me!" He's known these people for over 20 years so I sort of thought he would've mentioned this little factoid.

  • This isn't really embarrassing, but it is funny. When I was like 5 I really wanted a Baby Alive doll for Christmas. My grandma convinced me ahead of time that they were bad for some reason, and that I didn't want one. So when I opened a present from my aunt on Christmas and saw that it was that doll, I started crying and saying that I didn't want it anymore! My poor aunt was so upset (she had been so excited to give it to me). I think I eventually played with it, but it was not a good reaction initially!
