We may be looking to trade in DH's truck in the next year. A pick-up truck isn't really car-seat friendly. He has always had a truck, so to go to an SUV would be a smooth transition for him as oppposed to a sedan. Anyone have any ideas for a used SUV that would be 12,000 or under and be relatively reliable? He also would like it to be ok on gas and not be too girly. We are trying to avoid a second car payment.

Re: Used SUV reccs
We were looking for similar and ended up buying an HHR. You may want to include crossovers in your search because you'll likely be able to get something newer due to the lower starting pricepoint.
FWIW, I freaking love this car. It has 3 latch harnesses, is plasticy in the back- you can raise the bottom part of the trunk up so no one can peek in on purchases, it is completely convertible (can haul a ton of crap- all of our boxes and small furniture- and by small, i mean dining table, patio furniture and arm chairs came via our car in the move), and gets really good gas mileage. Also has available Stabilitrac AWD (which we got, but haven't tested yet- bought in July).
ETA: if you look at these, make sure it comes with the trunk mat- otherwise your groceries will slide. haha, lesson learned. They're not expensive if you can't find one (>$100) but it is an obnoxious lesson.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
I like my Escape. I haven't had it long, but they are everywhere. A friend's mom has had hers for years with no issues. They are always in demand and hold their value well (at least that is what I was told).
I usually get around 25-26 mpg with a mix of city & highway driving.
My parents have had their Escape (2008) 2 years and have already put a new transmission in it. I've had 3 friends also have the same issue. Not a cheap repair. They also flip fairly easily (I've had 2 of those 3 friends flip theirs).

I'm late, but I also love my Liberty. Mine is a 2003, and was my mom's when she had my little sister (2005). It was definitely big enough for her (and two teenagers!)
I'm also at 201,000 miles, so if you buy used, you know you'll still get a lot of use out of it.
ooh, good to know! Maybe we can make it work and I won't have to get a new car...
Yep! I mean, everybody's different, you guys might want more space, but it totally worked for our family.
