What's your favorite fancy hotel ITL?

And why?

What are their best attributes?

Anniversary planning. :-)  Thanks!

Re: What's your favorite fancy hotel ITL?

  • We spent ours at ZaZa and had a fantastic time (www.hautemommyblog.com/2011/10/houston-honeymoon.html).  I'm also a huge Four Seasons fan, but don't love the one here.  The Houstonian is nice, and I also like Hotel Derek and would have spent my anniversary at either....but I was booking the day of and Zaza gave us a better deal.

They had champagne and strawberries waiting in our room, and when we checked in they gave us cards for free drinks (unlimited at poolside) and breakfast in their restaurant.  I'm not sure if that's the norm or because I was disappointed that I could only book a friday night and not the whole weekend.  The spa was amazing too!

  • Hotel Icon is my mist favorite. The rooms are beautifully furnished and I love being downtown.

  • I disagree with Hotel Derek.  We spent two nights there for my birthday and I didn't think it was worth the price.

  • I spent a bachelorette party with friends at Zaza, and thought the service and decor was amazing.  I didn't feel like I was in my home city.
  • If you're going to do Derek, just stay at the Westin and you're in a better location for walking to restaurants & shopping.

I like Icon.  Not sure when your anniversary is, but they are working on a renovation to complete in the spring.

The only hotel I've stayed at DT was the Inn at the Ballpark.  Cute rooms.  I also like the location of the Embassy - close to Discovery Green and the stuff around House of Blues.

  • Icon.

Zaza is pretty but they are douchy and have an over-inflated sense of self importance that really turns me off. My BF stayed there for almost 2 weeks last time she was in town (on expense account, of course) and she didn't rave. She's been all over the world and thought it was pretty average for all the hype. The time I spent visiting left me feeling the same. Plus, there was the fact that they wouldn't let Jax photograph her bride in the room. So annoying.

    Anyway, Icon.

Colombe d'Or is also worth checking out.

  • Although slightly outside the loop, the Houstonian is very nice and has an AMAZING spa!!  You may also want to check out the Magnolia downtown.  Stayed there many years ago so not sure if it still the same, but I know they have lots of specials.
  • I like the Magnolia personally.  I've stayed there twice and really enjoyed it both times.  I haven't stayed at the Zaza since the name change, but I stayed there my wedding night when they were the Warwick and they were full of douchebaggery.

I feel the same about ZaZa.  Icon is nicer.

I LOVE Hotel Icon.  LOVE.  The rooms are fantastic, the food is absolutely wonderful, we have always had great service there.  The spa is so quiet, dark, and intimate... DH and I did a couples massage when we stayed for our date-a-versary.  It's also nice to be so close to the rail-- we rode down to the museums.

The rooms at La Colombe D'or are GIANT.  There are only like 6 or 7 of them, so it's small and family-feeling.  In many of them you have your own giant dining area. PLUS, you're super close to Niko Niko's, which is like the golden food of humans in my book...lol.  The only drawback for LCD is perhaps the bathrooms are not as fancy and updated as some of the newer hotels.  More on the eh/so-so side.  They aren't gross, but they aren't fancy.

Zaza is about zaza.  Not generally about the guest (unless you are in one of the suites that are a couple of thousand dollars a night-- then they'll let you fill the floor with your skunky weed smoke and turn a blind eye).  I wasn't overly impressed when I stayed there, and my experience with the way they treated the bride I was working with pretty much sealed the deal that I will never be staying there of free will again.  They are just too whiny and me-me-me overall.  I have never gotten a "warm" feeling from the staff.  They're very "LOOK AT ME!  LOOK A ME!"

Magnolia is nice, not over the top special IMO.  Big floofy white linen beds, close to a lot of stuff, and they have cookies and milk in the lobby in the evenings.  The lobby is lovely and warm, staff is very attentive and sweet.

  •  We stayed at Hotel Icon for our 2 year anniversary, and we loved it. Great room, fantastic bathroom, attentive service.

Also love The Houstonian, although it's technically in the loop. (ETA: NOT in the loop, I meant to say.) Definitely more of an old school Houston "socialite" type of vibe, but the service is above and beyond, the food is really good, and the spa is my favorite in Houston. Not to mention that the grounds are so pretty, especially during azalea season.

  • My biggest issue with Zaza is that the lobby always smells like they just emptied their grease trap.  It is not a good smell.  On the plus side, The Rock Star suite there is amazing!
