Christmas spending poll

Seeing some of the gifts ideas in the post below, made me realize that some of you guys spend a lot on gifts for each other!  What's your typical spending on gifts for your H?

Re: Christmas spending poll

  • We maybe spend 100? We used to spend more but with the house and being broke we trimmed it down.

  • He said he didn't want anything but bought me my iPhone ($200) so I'm aiming to be in the same range.  I've spent $140 thus far and he'll probably get a few more little things.

  • Since you asked what we typically spend, I said between $150 - $200...because that's the norm. This year money's been tight so we said there was a $50 limit, but we both threw that out the window - so, I assume we'll be spending the $150 - $200 on each other.

  • We budget $300 for each other.
  • Josh usually blows the budget on gifts for me, so for that reason, I try to spend a little more on him too. We don't usually set an exact number. I think this year, we'll probably spend less on each other and focus more on Audrey:)
  • We are just doing stockings for each other.  This is Parker's first real Christmas he will actually really participate in so we are kind of going overboard with that, that is more fun anyway.  ;)
  • This year we budgeted $50 each, plus stocking stuffers. (little stocking stuffers like candy and such).

We said $100 for Ellie but I think we've blown that. It's all about her.

  • Billy always goes above and beyond for me so I try to get him at least one big big gift and then a bunt of little things.

This yr I have probably spent about 100-150 so far and I still want to get him a few little things and then everything for his stocking.

We set a limit for Teaghan, we said three toys, some books and a dvd of elmo but we blew that out of the water.

  • We never really set a number but I normally spend about $150-$200 on him for Christmas and $100 for birthdays/anniversary.  I know he normally spends more on me for anniversary and Christmas because I don't buy as many large items throughout the year as he does for himself.

We also have a pretty cushy expendable income, so we tend to buy the things we want freely throughout the year.

  • We usually don't do Christmas gifts for each other. We like to save all extra money like that for vacations or to put into future savings for a house.

  • It varies by year, but on average our gifts have been around $200.  This year, with replacing our A/C and refrigerator, we're having a smaller Christmas, around $100.

  • I said $200-250 because thats what we aim for...sometimes its more, sometimes its less.  We save one of our "extra" paychecks especially for holiday shopping since neither of us get bonuses and the like, so we kinda just go with it.

  • Usually it's around $200, but he just bought a new computer on Monday so it might be more like $100.

I seem to have no budget for Adrian. :-P

  • so, over 55% of Niners spend more than $150 on their spouse for Christmas.  Wow.  What do you guys DO for a living?!  Do you spend this much as all holidays, like birthdays, V-day, and anniversaries?

Not only can I not wrap my head around that amount of money on gifts, but how in the world do you come up with that much stuff to give them?  Maybe we just get too much stuff throughout the year as we need it (like clothes, etc), but I would have no idea how to spend that much money on H that many times a year...

No.  Maybe a card and a dinner out, a small token, but that's it for every other time of the year.  $50 MAX, if that, for everything else.

Yep, this is us too.  I'm planning a bigger bday gift for him because it will happen right after I hopefully get my second bonus, so instead of a personal reward I'm going to buy him a smartphone or an iPad with 3G.

    This.

I also think we don't spend much on each other for Christmas because both our birthdays are within 2 months of Christmas. We spend more on birthdays and anniversaries because they are more personal to us.

  • I realize that may have come off a little snarky, I don't really mean it that way.  I'm genuinely shocked at this.  I guess my family was just never that big on gift giving...

  • I actually didn't vote because I don't know what to pick! The past couple of years we've been pretty broke, but this year DH worked a special job where he got payed more than double his normal wage for about 5 months!

So normally we get each other something under $50...But this year, it'll be between $50 and $100

For us like I said above, birthdays and anniversaries we go to about $100 or so although Andy has been buying me jewelry lately that is well above that, I'm sure.  For Valentine's we just do a card and a nice ($100-$125) dinner.

For Andy, its really easy for me to spend that amount of money on him because he has expensive hobbies.  The clothes he uses for hunting are expensive, guns are expensive, ammo is expensive, mounting is expensive, its all very pricey.

This is going to sound really terrible, but most of the stuff we buy for each other or that we buy for ourselves throughout the year we don't need.  Its things we want.  We make good money and we're able to do that.  If we had a financial situation where we only bought things that we NEEDED surely, it would be less.  Honestly, we have more than we need but we're not in a position where it really matters.

Some of the things that I asked for this year include: a $40 robe from Gap, a Kindle Fire, some lotions and bubble bath from VS which are about $20 each, a spa gift card, a kitchen torch and ramekins, some magazine subscriptions, a Duke sweatshirt, pashminas in various colors, tall socks for with boots, and a Vera Bradley scarf.  All in all if he got everything on that list it would be ~$600.

I mean honestly, if you thought about all the possible kitchen and cooking items that you wished you could have if you had the budget....I bet you could have Scott spend that much on you.

Every Christmas we say "let's go small on each other since our birthdays are in January. We'll do something big then," But then he goes over the budget and that makes me go over the budget. I'd say we spend about the same on birthdays and Christmas.

Since we started living together, Valentines Day has been just a night at home where we cook dinner together. Something we NEVER do. We don't share the kitchen for very well.

We try to do a trip for our anniversary - but this year it just wasn't in the budget so we went out for a nice dinner ($100) instead.

  • Well, we're teachers, but from this poll we seem like ballers. We spend $300ish (a little over) at Christmas and for birthdays. For VD and annis, we spend about $100, except for our first anni when we said $200, but I did b-pics and went way over (if you count the cost of lingerie). We have a pretty low COL (debt-free other than our mortgage) and enough cushion money each month that it doesn't really phase us.

Since both of our birthdays are in September and are very close to our anniversary, we often lump the anniversary and birthday gifts.  But we do spend about the same, ~$200.  We don't celebrate V-day except for dinner and we don't necessarily do it the night of V-day.  We make a decent amount of money, we're both engineers.
