How long does it take to renew passport after Marriage?

I haven't renewed my passport and just found out I have to fly to Toronto for a work trip the last week in January.  Should I risk it and rewnew now (I have to change my name and my passport is a few years old, so it will be like getting a new one) or should I just wait until after my trip and travel with  my maiden name?

  • I got mine back in 17 days.

They do allow you to do it in person at the office in Seattle by appointment if you are traveling within a certain period of time (2-3 weeks, I think). If you're worried about it that might be the way to go.

This is the advice generally given on the travel board, fwiw.

  • if it's at the end of january you have plenty of time to get a new one.  but, if you're lazy like me (married 2+ years and went on a trip 2 weeks ago) you can travel with your maiden name as long as all your tickets etc. are in that name.

It takes just as long as getting a new passport. I think I got mine back in the mail in like 2-3 weeks. But you'd have to go through the trouble of getting a new license and SS card first. If your current passport is still good and you haven't changed your name legally yet, I would just wait until after you get back and take care of it all then. With the holidays coming up the govt is going to be moving slower than usual.

This, even if your license and SS card are already changed, I'd still fly under your maiden name and just use your passport as your ID when the TSA checks your name versus your ticket -- it's a perfectly valid form of ID and they won't give you any trouble with it.

Given that it took me 4-5 weeks to get my passport back in June, with no holidays (just summer!) in the way, I wouldn't chance not having it back in time, just in case!

ETA: If you HAVE changed your license and are paranoid about someone comparing it to your passport (which, tbh, has never happened to me despite driving in Canada on several occasions and flying there as well), then bring the license, the passport under your maiden name, and a copy of your marriage license -- that gives any authority who tries to give you trouble the paper trail connecting your maiden and married names.

actually, this isn't necessary if you have changed everything else.  I changed my name on my SS and driver's license right after we got married but never got around to my passport.  I just traveled and as long as the ticket matched the passport, there's no problem!

  • ok thanks ladies.  I have changed my SS, DL card and every other form of ID (including bank and credit cards) but when we typically go home for Christmas we go visit Canadian relatives so I didn't want to change it just yet.  Then we decided not to go home so I'm thinking maybe I should change it.  I might just pay the expedited fee (i think it's an extra $60 plus overnight shipping) so that I'm absolutely sure it will get back to me in time.

Yeah, like I said -- it's never happened to me and I've never had a problem where someone would want to compare the two, but if one were to be paranoid (I did use the word deliberately, haha) about a problem cropping up, that would be the way to handle it. :)
