Can we talk about Suh?

Okay, I don't really care for football.  I mean...I enjoy watching a game or two here, merely as a social sort of activity (lol), but as far as following a team religiously...well that's not really my thing.

But...I thought I knew enough about Suh to feel safe in assuming that he was a pretty good kid, upstanding and whatnot.

So, what the fricking frick is his major malfunction these days?  Is he 'roiding out?  Is it that he doesn't have a college handler anymore?  What the crap?

His actions are nothing short of ridiculous.

Re: Can we talk about Suh?

  • I am a pretty active football follower and can say that I think a lot of it was the image he perceived prior to all of this happening.  Donating money to charity, etc has built this amazing image of him (especially in fanatic Husker fans) and for him to do this disappoints many people, even those out of state people who are Lions fans.  Also, he is suppose to be the heart and soul of the rebuilding of the Lions (who were horrible until a couple of years ago) and so the branded him as their superstar and now this is all happening.

A defensive lineman's job is difficult and I cannot imagine what the opposing team tries to do to him everytime they line up across from him in terms of cheap shots, but if you do make a mistake, admit to it right away and don't bring religion into the conversation.  Also, his claims to being to being bigger, stronger, "the new breed" of football players, is probably not making friends with other teams who many that the Lions are playing are all fighting for playoffs right now (Lions included).  I have heard that he is also trying new types of foods/supplements/etc. that might eventually be banned in the NFL so that might have caused some of his temperment (look at Bill Romanoski as an example of using experimental drugs that made him extremely mean and eventually having to rely on them to keep going in the game).

  • I just don't get it.  It has happened more than once now.  And I don't buy the whole "but we don't know what happens to him!" thing.  He blatantly stomped on that guy, after slamming his head into the turf 3 times.  Whoa man!  That's what I call excessive.

  • I'm not an avid follower of football. However, I think at one point in time everyone does something that would disappoint. I think for someone like Suh, he's always in the limelight.  Was it unprofessional? Yes it was.......I'm not saying that, but everyone including football players, actors, presidents, and just any normal person  will do something to disappoint. I think that he learned from his actions and now his suspension. I believe he truely is a nice and wonderful guy and hope people can eventually see past this.  I saw on someones FB that he had posted an appolgy like 12 hrs after it happened and had a chance to reflect on his actions.Sometimes in the heat of the moment people do not always think straight. I didn't see the video or play or anything, I'm just going off what I think. I think his suspension was right for them to do. So, it does make people realize that bad actions equals a consequence.

  • On Friday, the day after he stomped on the arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith, Detroit Lions defensive tackle, Ndamukong Suh issued an apology, of sorts, via Facebook, but not to Dietrich-Smith.

    google_protectAndRun("render_ads.js::google_render_ad", google_handleError, google_render_ad);
On his Facebook page, Ndamukong Suh did not admit that he stomped on the arm of Dietrich-Smith on Thursday during Detroit's 27-15 loss to Green Bay, and he apologized to his teammates, the Lions' organization and to fans. He did not apologize to Dietrich-Smith.

ESPN Radio theorized on Saturday that "someone in the Lions organization" got to Suh, and said he had better issue a statement. Issuing it via Facebook isn't unheard of, but certainly would not seem to carry the weight of a full press release. Here is what Suh said, via Facebook:

In the past few hours, I have had time to reflect on yesterday's game and I want to sincerely apologize for letting my teammates down, the organization, and especially to my fans who look to me for positive inspiration.

Playing professional sports is not a game. It is a profession with great responsibility, and where performance on and off the field should never be compromised. It requires a calm and determined demeanor, which cannot be derailed by the game, referee calls, fans or other players.

I want to reiterate my commitment to working to become a better player, and professional--on and off the field. My reaction on Thursday was unacceptable. I made a mistake, and have learned from it. I hope to direct the focus back to the task at hand -- by winning.

Suh's original statement was more succinct. He denied he had done anything wrong. He said,

I was on top of a guy being pulled down and trying to get up off the ground. Why you see me pushing his helmet down, because I'm trying to remove myself from the situation and as I'm getting up, I'm getting pushed, so I'm getting myself on balance and getting out of the situation. With that, a lot of people are going to interpret it as, or create their own storylines for seeing what they want to interpret it, but I know what I did and the man upstairs knows what I did.

You can watch his post-game comments below. You can see video of the actual "stomp" here, which seems to belie his statements.

    image
  • Trying to get up and out?  That requires three slams of that dude's head into the ground?

    And the stomp?

    image

Seriously dude, admit you lost your head.  And apologize for what you did.  And not 12 hours later after you've got a talkin' to.

  • I'm kind of dissapointed in him, mainly because he kept denying it and didn't just own up to it. I don't think people should really be so shocked though. You know there has to be a lot of shiit talking while on the field. That guy could have been mouthing off to him and Suh just chose to handle it wrong. I played sports all my life and people try to get in your head and sometimes you just want to pound them into the ground to get them to keep quiet.

Oh, I totally understand this.  I lost my head once during a 3 on 3 basketball tournament.  Granted, it was a Gus Macker which is notorious for being rough streetball, but the chick kept pulling my hair (such a girl!)  I told her to stop, she ran her mouth some more and then I threw an elbow.  It just happened to catch her in the throat and dramatics followed when she claimed she couldn't breathe.

    Ha.

Not one of my finer moments.  And I did apologize multiple times.  But I was also a 15 year old girl.  Not a grown man being paid millions of dollars to play a sport professional (and by doing so...becoming quite an example to the youth who watch).

That's my beef.  Just own it and learn from it.

  • Sidenote: I am a HUGE Chicago Bears fan so this might seem biased :)

When the Lions and Bears played a couple of weeks ago, Suh should have been called for a couple of unsportsmanlike conducts in MHO but was not.  That does not say he hasn't been fined prior (as in he has received the most fines (9) than any other player in the last two years I believe).  I do think heat of the moment is involved but he is becoming EXTREMELY dirty and continues to think nothing will come of it but the fines which a total of $42000 is chump change in his book.  I think that the 2 game suspension will hopefully make him reconsider his actions especially as there is a good chance it pushes the Lions out play-off contentions if the lose while he is not playing.

  • Ditto what melgu and lindsay said. I think he lost it and reacted bad (badly??). I did lose some respect for him with his lame first excuse but that said I do like the guy and think he is a good guy normally.

  • Well, I am an avid football follower as is dh.  We had defended him in the past thinking that the league/media was just trying to tarnish his image but after this weekends events he needs to make some changes, that was completely uncalled for.

Now at the same time I don't put all the blame on him. A lot of it goes on the coaching staff and what could have been corrected with past incidences. This is the lions team we are talking about, the have sucked for years and suddenly they have this bad boy attitude and image as a TEAM and a we don't care, we are just going to get it done to win. Suh being the aggressive player he has always been more than likely took it to heart, but unfortunately has not channeled it properly on and off the field. Hopefully the suspension, counseling, team fine will change things and they can continue on as a decent team and not one everyone hates because they are dirty.

On a different note did anyone catch the clip of the chargers kicker pi$$ing on the side of the field. Keep it Klassy San Diego!

Like I said, if it was a one time thing, it wouldn't bring quite as much WTF from me.  But:

These aren't the statistics Ndamukong Suh was looking to compile in his second season ? nine personal foul penalties, $47,500 in fines, $165,000 in lost salary and, as the NFL decreed Tuesday morning, a two-game suspension.

That's a lot of acting poorly!

Agree with it also being a team problem.  Even Tony Dungy said that this is something that should have been addressed long ago with Suh by the coaching staff instead of just kind of sweeping it under the proverbial rug.

  • Also, as a team after that incident why in the world did they let him talk to the media?  There is no reason why he should have been out there or he should have been coached on you will say this....and nothing else.

DH and I got quite a laugh out of this one the other night!  Seriously, who does that?  You can't wait a couple minutes to go in to the locker room??

Someone close to me had to work very closely with him (lol, cryptic I know) and I can assure the above statement wasnt true 2 years ago.. if that says anything. :)

  • Regarding peeing incident: I had a sibling play for a pretty major college team and all of the players did this especially during televised games as those games can go extremely long in the halves with commercials etc.  The trainers pump the players full of liquids to keep them hydrated/no cramping and often times there is a set place where empty bottles are strategically placed behind something that people basically know it is the "pee" area! LOL
