Mid Iowa Fertility IUI

Hello all!

This is my first posting here though I have been reading for a long time.  My husband and I have been TTC #1 since January of this year.  I just got my period today which means next month will be one year.  We are both 35, and have had all the tests and have no known issues.  I ovulate normally, but Dr. Young put me on Clomid for the last 3 months anyway.  Obviously, it hasn't helped.  We have an appt. in the next two weeks to discuss our next options, which I imagine will be IUI.

Has anyone hear had experience with it?  None of my fertility treatments will be covered by insurance, so I need to be selective with which ones I try (I can't afford 4 or 5 IUI's unmedicated, to move on to meds, and then IVF).  So, I'm just curious what to expect, and what others experiences have been?  Anyone?

TTC #1 since 2/2011. Me: Age 36. Stage III Endo and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.
IUI #1 March: BFN, IUI #2 April: BFN.
IVF #1: Started stims 7/30--CANCELLED.
IVF #1.2: Stims start 10/8/12, ER: 10/20/12; 11R/8M/4F, 5DT: 10/25/12, transfer of a 4AA and 3AB Blast. BFP on HPT 10/31/12; Beta #1: (16 DPO) 954! Beta #2: (18 DPO) 1968! First U/S: TWINS!! A/S: TWO BOYS! EDD: 7/13/13

Re: Mid Iowa Fertility IUI

  • from what I can remember, the sperm wash is about $200, and the IUI cost is about $300 (from a few years ago, and a huge estimate).  I'd go in to your next appointment and just explain your financial situation, and go over your specific diagnosis to see where you need to go.

I did the clomid challenge, but my body doesn't do hormones on it's own.  So we moved on to IUI with injectibles.  Which could have eventually worked, but I made too many eggs, so we converted to IVF.  I was lucky that my insurance covers IF, so that was never an issue for me.  I might have some Follistim left that's still good if you need it.  You can also post for needed meds on the Infertility board.

    GOOD LUCK!

  • Those estimates are pretty correct. Both of my babies are follistim/IUI babies.

Here are my thoughts. If it were me, I'd probably try try a round of follistim/gonal F(injectables) either alone with timed intercourse or with an IUI to see how your body responds to the bigger drugs. Then you can make an educated decision about whether it's going to be easy or hard to make eggs for an IVF retrieval if needed. You'd hate to pay for an IVF cycle and have it cancelled because you didn't respond to meds, etc. That's just one opinion though. :)

  • Thanks so much for the feedback!  It's really more helpful than you know.

We have our appt. on Dec. 14th, so I'll definitely update you all regarding what we are told.  It's just hard for me to guess being that we likely have unexplained infertility.  Nothing appears to be "wrong" other than not getting pregnant.  :(
