where did looney toons go wrong?

i liked both looney tunes and disney characters when i was little.. but somewhere along the line i think we can all agree that looney tunes went down the wrong road and disney kept it real.

what happened?

Re: where did looney toons go wrong?

  • DH and I had this discussion recently after seeing "The Looney Tunes Show" on Cartoon Network. It seemed to us that instead of keeping it simple like it always has been they are trying too hard to make it edgier and more grownup. The only complete episode I saw seemed like they were trying to make it a sitcom with a storyline, plot, etc.
  • I think it was $$$. remember when there were warner brothers stores in malls? I think they had a lot of studio changes after that and they weren't investing the money in looney toons the same way. Disney invested lots of cash in finding the next big thing (pixar, etc) and making big budget movies that got big returns. they were big on advancing animation too (remember how it was a huge deal how realistic the ballroom scene in beauty and the beast looked? minus the talking furniture of course). I don't think WB was trying to be like that.

That said I always preferred other stuff over Looney Toons, although I loved animaniacs. I remember an old boyfriend and I arguing over muppets vs looney toons.

  • My brother loved all the looney tunes.  I wasn't crazy about them.  I loved the smurfs and princesses.

My cynical friends would say this is another example of the pu**ification of America (their term, not mine).

Smurfs and princesses are all about puppies and rainbows which I can totally get behind (see avatar).  In contrast, the looney tunes were laden with sarcasm and insults (bugs bunny was funny but kind of an a-hole).  And then there are the non-PC stereotypes in some of their cartoons.

ETA - examples of censored Looney Tunes cartoons in this link:

The cartoons reflected the signs of the times which included impressions of comedians doing black face, jokes about races, negative stereotypes of Blacks, Hispanics, Jews, etc. (I loved Speedy Gonzales but he offended some... I had no idea when i was a kid).  And they also illustrated a lot of vices like smoking, drinking - these were all part of what made their characters funny.  Much of the comedy was also slapstick which includes scenes of violence, which were often censored out.  All the censoring censored all the funny out of them.  And/or what is acceptable as "funny" for kids has changed.

  • I love super old Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, but anything made after the 50s is crap.
