Oh H.

I'm going to assume it's the meds talking, but dude, that guy needs to go back to the office. He's going to drive me batty if he keeps working from home.

We got an entry level espresso machine as a wedding present. I'm allergic to coffee, so it's only H that can use it. Quite literally, it's been sitting on the counter for 3 years and it's been used 6 times.  He said that it's just too much work to make coffee with that thing.

So then, he goes out to buy a french press. I think in the year that he's had that he's used it 4 times. I suppose the french press is fairing better than the espresso machine, but still.

So just now, he emails me about the Nespresso sale going on at Williams Sonoma and that he's thinking about getting one.

Seriously. How many coffee devices does one man need?

Re: Oh H.

  • Oh no, your H has new hobby male gadget fever.

Unfortunately I don't know what the cure is. Maybe you should make him host brunch using his current coffee gadget before buying a new one?

EDIT: Okay, I just looked up what a Nespresso even was. That's just domb. We had one of those in our old office building and the coffee available in those one-shot thingies isn't very good. French press coffee is really easy and much tastier.

If he really wants to drink espresso drinks my SFIL* has had good luck buying used stuff off craigslist.

hahaha, I was completely unaware that male gadget fever could infect kitchen gadgets. I should have known better. Big Smile

  • Maybe he should find a favorite coffee shop instead... it would cost less and save counter space.

My brother bought one and he doesn't drink coffee - he likes how quickly it makes hot chocolate for my niece.

Is this, like, you want to trade in one of your coffee makers for a better one? Or do you really want to own 4?

I'd own 4.  I have three now (espresso, small french press, large french press) and i think a regular coffee pot could be useful for guests (the french press scares people off sometimes).

  • Well, I guess the question is - how often does he drink coffee, and how much? If he drank it every day and actually took the time to make the espresso every day (which sucks, it's such a PITA!), I'd understand his need to have that many devices for making coffee. We have an espresso machine, and it's barely used. We didn't use it most of this year because I was pg and couldn't drink coffee (let alone espresso) anyway, and it was just too much of a hassle for DH to use it and just make one drink. The cleanup alone is enough to make me hate using the thing. I think the French press is much more user-friendly, but still a PITA to clean. I much prefer the drip coffee maker we have for every day use. If he wants espresso, let him go to Starbucks!

And that new Nespresso maker thing looks awesome, but I think it would only be practical if several people were going to use it daily or semi-regularly. There was one like that in our hotel in Paris, and it was AWESOME, but many, many people were using it daily, therefore was something useful. Not just something else taking up space.

I want to keep the ones I have and get an iced coffee maker. Our espresso maker does not work very well but it was a gift and the person was so excited to gift it that I would feel guilty ever getting rid of it.

  • I understand your frustration, but I understand your H.  I do drink coffee several times a day, but almost always buy it from Starbucks.  We have a cheap coffee pot we use occassionally, we had a crappy espresso machine for years that we never used and an old french press I never use, and I definitely want a nicer coffee pot, a good espresso machine, the single serving coffee pot, new french press...and I'd probably not use them very often, but I'd mean to.  It's a problem.
