MoCo Permit Question

Does anyone have any experience obtaining a permit in Montgomery County?  My husband and I want to add a bathroom upstairs.  I have an uncle, who is a contractor but not licensed here, who will do the work.

Can I, as the homeowner, get a permit in my name and have my uncle do the work?  Thanks!

Re: MoCo Permit Question

  • DH says you dont need a permit for anything that is interior work unless it's maybe gas related and you want an inspector to check it out when you have finished
  • Thanks for responding.  I'm getting a lot of conflicting information.
  • pp is right you don't need a permit for anything basic. we renovated a bathroom and took everything down to the studs and we didn't need one - but we didn't mess with electrical or gas.

i'm pretty sure electrical work will require a permit - so if you're creating outlets that didn't used to exist, adding wiring, circuits, etc. then yes, i think you need one because the work needs to be inspected. if he's not licensed here and he's going to do electrical work, he'll have to take a test through the county to be able to do it legally.

i have no idea about the name issue though. you might want to just call the permit office and flat out ask.
