BF help-almost ready to quit

DS has not been nearly as "easy" to BF and we have dealt we all new problems this time around.  For the last two weeks, I have been dealing with a bit of thursh.  It was better over the weekend, but DS is now on antibiotics for cough, so things may get worse not better.

My nipples are cracked around the nipple, like in a circle.  Each time he nurses or I pump it breaks open again.  I am on diflucan to try to clear the yeast, but it isn't doing anything to help me heal.  I am about ready to quit (I only BF in the AM, overnight if needed and pump two times/day)

My supply is tanked through all of this.  Anyone have advice on getting healed up?  Im so afraid of mastitis!  If I do decide to quit now do you think my risk of mastitis will be more because of the cracking/bleeding?

Help!

  • We've dealt with thrush twice -- the first time, he had it longer than me. The second time, it took me WAY longer to get rid of. Are they treating DS for the thrush, or just you? The entire time I was being treated, I had to contnue treating DS as well....

For the cracks, have you tried putting expressed BM on the cracks? Someone on here suggested that when Lanolin wasn't working, and the crack cleared up within a couple days, even with nursing and pumping.

  • They treated L with gentian violet.  I am on diflucan.  I think I will call tomorrow for a refill.  I just can't get the cracks to heal up, and it isn't like I can do naked during the day!

  • thrush w/ k around 10ish months and I couldn't get it back up.  nursed and did formula

crack w/ h.  Triple nipple cream works wonders.... need prescription for it.   ask for it - trust me.   Pedi gave me the prescription.

  • Ingredients:
     1. Antibiotic ointment (Mupirocin 2%)
Almost all cracks and erosions have bacteria in them. Whether they are actually
causing infection, or whether they merely delay healing is unknown. But it has been
known for many years that antibiotic ointment helps some mothers? nipple pain get
      better faster.
     2. Steroid ointment (Betamethasone 0.1%)
Often the nipple pain is caused by inflammation from infection or injury.
      Steroids decrease the inflammation.
     3. Antifungal agent (Miconazole or Nystatin 2%)
Candid albicans, a yeast, can cause nipple soreness and cracking, and can cause
persistent pain after the cracks have healed.
(Nystatin might be better to use preventatively, saving the Miconazole to treat presumed yeast infection of the nipple.)

  • When my nipples were sore and cracked I would put Lanolin on them and then a breast shield like this http://www.amazon.com/Medela-TheraShells-Breast-Shells-89930/dp/B0020OWVDS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1322628429&sr=8-2

It helped get air to the nipple so my shirt/bra wasn't constantly rubbing on them. And I think it said not to sleep with them but I did. It was the longest stretch and I/my nipples really needed the air.
