So now that I have a need to be on a BCP again, I figured I'd consult you ladies to get some insight & recommendations.
I was previously on Yaz, but it made me feel kinda crazy & apparently that hormone isn't good for you. Was on the Patch in college, but it made my legs feel all funny. Was on Ortho Tri-Cyclen as a teen & it also made me crazy. Was on Seasonique right around the time of the wedding, so I'm not sure if the crazy is attributed to the wedding or the pill. Could go either way. Did have some pretty severe cramping about 2 months in & quit that sucker.
Thoughts? Suggestions??
Re: Can We Talk About BCPs?
Almost every pill makes me a little crazy... I just had to find the one that made me the LEAST crazy LOL.
I will say that I was on Junel... and it was AWFUL! Breakthrough bleeding, huge moodswings, no sex drive and bad cramping with AF. I looked it up after 4 months and the reviews by other woman were overwhelmingly bad. I swithed
I am on Ortho tricyclen and it is better. Yaz was pretty decent fo me too.
It is a crap shoot.. You just have to try until you find the right fit.
I was on Yaz back in the day. I stopped taking it right after I got married because I thought it was contributing to my stomach issues.
After the divorce, I wanted to start something again, so my doc gave me Junel. I've been on it for less than a year, but I am coming off it just this month, actually, because I feel like it's contributing to my stomach issues again (this is a theme with me, ha).
I am in the middle of reading "Taking Charge of Your Fertility," and I plan on relying on charting and condoms for the foreseeable future. Hormonal birth control apparently effs up my system too much. Honestly, I'm glad to be rid of it. I never felt awesome on BCPs.
I know finding the right thing you for can be a really frustrating journey -- good luck!
This! Though I am no longer on any form of BCP and I feel better than ever. After struggling with trying to conceive and learning to chart.... I got a real good hang of it and use the charting to avoid fertile days now.
It's different for everyone. I tried Seasonale (I think) when it first came out years and years ago and HATED it--I spotted every day for 6+ months. I have a friend who's on Seasonique (or something similar) and swears by it, so maybe they've fixed that issue. Idk.
I've been on Lo Ogesterel/Lo Ovral 28 for about 8 years now. It makes my cramping managable (that's the reason that I went on it in the first place) and my period lighter and doesn't seem to cause crazy breakouts. I get some minor PMS symptoms, but nothing TOO bad (although BF might disagree haha!). I suspect that it may lower my sex drive somewhat, but I've been on it since before I was sexually active, so it's hard to say for sure. I also suspect that it makes me hungrier than I normally would be, but I've managed to stay in a healthy weight range by eating reasonably healthily and staying active. It works well enough for me, and I don't feel like going through the crazy hormonal changes of switching.
I was on Ortho-Tri before DS was born. Turns out my bipolar medication interfered with it. Hence, DS
Before that I was Depo-Provera. NEVER again. EVER.
I'm now trying Mirena so we will see if that works better.
Generic Seasonale. It's $13 for a 3 month supply at Costco (with insurance). Yaz made me a crazy person. Seasonale is great - you get a period only every 3 months. The downside is when I get my period, it is a little heavier and I'm moody. But the other 3 months are golden. I've never spotted, but I've also never had an issue before (I like skipping placebos anyway on my old pills).
No pill has ever been perfect for me.
This was weird for me to have to worry about birth control after so many years. XH was fixed. I am older and Mirena was what I went with. It has made my periods very very light. I am not lucky enough to not get them as some people are. But I have not had any side effects. No weight gain, libido is great. I love it.
I know several of my daughters friends have it also and they like it. They are in their 20's.
Yaz made me nuts too.
I love love love LosSeasonique. I will never go off of it unless I absolutely have to. Low dose, only a 2 or 3 day slight period every 3 months, no mood swings or giant hormone fluctuations. I can't say enough about how much I love this pill. THe only downside is that you may have breakthrough spotting if you do not take it religiously at the same time every single day. I haven't had a problem with that after the first 2 months.
I chart/use condoms right now and it works great for me. I'm considering going back on BCP next month after I talk with my doc. As a teen I used Desogen and loved it. In my 20s I used Loestrin and loved it, but that has caused breakthrough bleeding for me in my 30s.
I was another Yaz-makes-me-crazy person. My BFF uses the Nuvaring and swears by it. I'm considering that (but it will depend on what my doc says, obviously).
I'm another no BCP person. I started charted when XH and I were TTC and my body is so regular now that if I decide to have sex, I avoid or use condoms during fertile days.
I was on Yasmin, not Yaz, and loved it. Ever since I got off hormones I am much happier though.
