Please educate me IUI...

Cheryl's going to have an IUI.  I don't mean to sound ignorant, but I'm confused.  What are the advantages of having an IUI over scheduled insemination via intercourse?

Sorry, they don't teach these things in med school or my pediatric residency.

Re: Please educate me IUI...

  • With an IUI, the semen is washed and then the sperm is then placed into a catheter, then it is injected into a women's uterus. This brings the sperm closer to the egg. IUI can be used to bypass hostile cervical mucus and help with some male fertility issues.

  • Some doctors also select the sperm with the best motility to inject to increase likelihood of success (assuming you have a large enouch specimen).
