Hi!

So, I would like your honest opinon on the Chicken Pox Vaccination. Neena is not currently vaccinated for Chicken Pox and will most likely remain that way, but I really want to know how you feel about it. Our pedi. administers the vaccine but does not push it as she doesn't view it as necessary like she does most other vaccines (besides rotavirus). Also, I know that the vaccination isn't super effective.

The group of moms I hang our with are very holistic and most of their kids are vaccinated at all and they like to host Chicken Pox parties when there is a break out. Not gonna lie, I'm tempted to take Neena to a chicken pox part when she's a bit older -- am I being ignorant? It's how we used to get chicken pox when I was little :-)

I'm not trying to start a debate, I just want your honest medical opinion and input.

FWIW, Neena is fully vaccinated besides chicken pox, rotavirus, and hep b. She will get hep b when she is 4.

  • Ya didn't ask my opinion, but I am going to give it anyway.

I'm anti-vaccine in terms of those that are not viewed as "necessary".

I'm with you, a chicken pox party sounds amazing. Mike and I are *knock on wood* healthy individuals, and maybe it is naive or ignorant to say, "we never had that, so why should Zac" but that is pretty much where our opinions lie.

  • I don't have a very good medical opinion, but I do have my personal opinion.  I think every child should be exposed to chicken pox at some time, whether it is vaccine or true exposure.  Getting chicken pox as an adult is much worse than as a child.  The vaccine people used to think 1 vaccine was enough, but there was still outbreaks, so that's why they're recommending two now.

I'll have my children get the chicken pox vaccine, but I would also respect people who didn't want to get it, but ask they go to a chicken pox party.

That being said, if neena decides to go into the healthcare field when she's older, she'll need either proof of chicken pox vaccination or confirmation via blood work that she has mounted an immune defense to chicken pox.

Chicken Pox party it is!! I agree with you on getting them when they are younger.  I didn't get chicken pox until 8th grade and it was horrible!!!

  • I was thinking about this too. When I was teaching chicken pox ran through the third grade and most of them had the vaccine. Now it could have been before the second dose was started (it was about 6 or 7 years ago).
