ICC

Has anyone been using it?  Has it made a difference in your commute?

I commute from Ellicott City to McLean (think Tyson's) everyday with my BIL and when we took the ICC last week when it opened, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, all other major roads were awful.  I was hoping it was because of the holiday.  Luckily - it was!  We've taken the ICC the last few days and it's been magical.  I've gotten home at 6-something, instead of 7ish.  I guess it also helps that we can take advantage of the HOV lane.

Either way - has anyone else used it....do you like it?

Re: ICC

  • I have not used it yet but plan too, just to say I drove on it.  My former team leader was the project director for it.
  • I won't have the need to take it on a regular basis, but I'm excited because my best friend lives in Germantown and the ICC is going to make getting to her house much faster.  Even on random Saturdays 495 can be a parking lot!
  • I am going to test it out this week going to my mom's.  Luckily I won't have to go onto 495 anymore.  The only downfall I see is that it's expensive.  But I will probably only use it on the weekends, not during rush hour.
  • Going from EC to Tysons - where did you take the ICC from/to?

We take it from 29 to 270 and then 270 down to the beltway.  If we didn't use the HOV lane, I'm not sure I would go this way.

  • I have a meeting in Gaithersburg today so I'll be trying it for the first time since the whole thing opened.

I have to say, traffic on 495 has been significantly better since the whole thing opened.  I imagine it will get a little worse when it stops being free but I've been totally cool with my morning commutes lately.

I know summerbride takes it to get to College Park and loves it.

  • Yes, I do and I love it!! This should have been built 20 years ago!!

I was even taking it from Gaithersburg to GA ave and winding my way down to CP and it was better than 270 and the beltway pay $1.45 and it was great!

I took it home last night from 95 and I was home in 40 mins! That is a good 20-45 mins shorter than what would usually take me to sit on the beltway and 270.

It also has exits at New Hampshire Ave, Layhill Rd, 29, GA Ave, so it makes getting around upper Moco, lower Hoco easy.

I've been debating if its the ICC or the holidays that have made my commute better the past two days.  I made it from the Beltsville/Calverton exit to Conneticut Ave in under 25 minutes both days!  Its like August again.  I hope it stays this way.

And then my office is moving to Rockville in the spring, so I will likely be on it daily.  They keep talking about the free parking out there, but the ICC will actually cost me more than the monthly parking.  *sigh*

Wait - how did I not know you do the HoCo to McLean thing, too??

Using the ICC probably wouldn't work out for me but I'm hoping it takes some of the usual traffic off of 29/95/495.  So far this week I haven't seen much of an improvement - and I wrote off last week because traffic was light anyway with the holiday.  But fingers crossed!!

  • I had been taking it from Georgia Ave to 370 until the full thing opened last week.  Now I've been taking it every day from 29 to 370 (I continue onto 370 past 270 as well).  One good thing about them opening the whole thing is that now there is more traffic on it (although not bad traffic ever) so now the traffic moves faster.  Be careful if you take it, there are always cops on it but now it's a little easier to move without feeling like you were the only person driving on the road and being a target for the police.

It has significantly cut down on my commute.  I live right near 108 and 29 and before it opened I had been driving 108 all the way from 29 to a cut through road to Georgia Ave or I was sitting on Norbeck Road for awhile when I went that way.  It took FOREVER in the woods through Highland and Olney and I would sit at lights through that area trying to get to Rockville.  I am told that the first part of the ICC cut out 15 minutes of my commute.  The new, full part now cuts out another 20 minutes for me, with the exception of when traffic is bad on 29.  Tonight I lost those 20 minutes sitting in backups on 29.  I think if I could move to Fulton and get off the ICC one exit sooner at Layhill Road I could really cut down on my commute.

The bottom line is that it definitely helps and in the mornings seems better than on the way home due to traffic on 29.  I've been taking it every day and I'm so thankful for it.  I wish they could magically do the construction they have in the plans for 29 though.
