Delivering at Methodist downtown

We may not have time to squeeze in a tour with DS and the holidays, so I'm asking my one question here.  How's the food?  In my binder it says there is room service from a menu.  I assume DH will have to go out to get his own food anyway so if the menu is bad I can do that too?

The nourishment area seems pretty promising.

Re: Delivering at Methodist downtown

  • My dad has been a patient at Methodist many times, the food isn't bad. (I can personally vouch that the strawberry shortcake & lemon bars are good. Wink)

If I remember correctly from our tour your DH can also order a meal for an extra fee. (I think it was $5-$10/meal?)

  • I spent over 18 days in the hospital at Methodist with my last pregnancy and I was pretty happy with it. Granted, I didn't have high expectations for hospital food. It's not gourmet by any means but they have a decent selection of basic food and their fruit was always fresh and good which was nice.

LOL!! I'll have to test it out first, but if DH has to pay that, I'd rather have him to go McDonald's and get me something too.

I assume the rooms and all that are fine.

Ashley - I was going to ask about your GD test - I'm going to Lakeview OB/Gyn, but my appointment was at the downtown clinic this time.  They gave me my drink right away, then saw me, then drew my blood after an hourand I was good to go.  Maybe an hour and 20?  But they did make me drive all the way to WDSM for my Rhogam shot because they were out, which was slightly annoying.

  • The rooms are very nice. Another tip about the food, my dad usually orders quite a bit. So much he could easily share with someone & he's never been charged extra. Example of a typical meal for him: personal pizza, salad, 2 string cheeses, fruit cup, cookies, lemon bar, 2 pops. (I know I'm making him sound like a pig, but really he likes to have snacks for later or he only feels like eating a few bites of something.) You could always go that route too, especially if one of you isn't very hungry.

I don't go to Lakeview so I don't have any advice there. (I had to have my Rhogam shot at Methodist, it took 3.5 hours which didn't make me happy.)

  • I delivered at Methodist downtown and had a great experience. The food is not out of this world but after being on meds for 24+ hours and not being able to eat I was so excited for food it was ok! You can order 3 meals a day and snacks if you want. I always thought I would eat more than I actually did so DH was able to munch off of my plate and then would run and get something of his own from the cafe or from nearby. There is a nourishment room on the floor that has some snack food, juice, yogurt, ice cream and pop which is nice to be able to grab whenever.

  • it's been awhile since i have eaten food at methodist myself, but as a doula i have grabbed food for some clients - it's typically cafeteria food, i guess. not bad.

when i stayed there for a week when Oli was born, we had food delivered so we didn't have to leave, and i was so tired of the hospital food. jimmy john's, big tomato pizza company....

  • When I worked downtown I liked the food.  I have no idea what all they have on their room service menu, but they have lots of different "stations" in the main cafeteria so you have different options.

I delivered at Methodist West with Collin and like PPs I ordered too much food each time so DH ate that and supplemented his meals with food from the nourishment room on the OB floor.  We both had three good meals a day that way and never had to pay extra.

  • I delivered at methodist west so my answer isn't really relevant, but i still have dreams about their pizza and freshly baked cookies with ice cold lemonade. i had that exact combo for every meal. it was amazing!  way better than typical hospital food. i have eated at the methodist caf a ton while adam was a resident.  i'm guessing the food is the same?  it is decent, not fantastic, but you'll be starving and it will taste pretty good i bet. :)

  • They have a book in your room, that'll have menus for other places, I know this because H had Beratta's delivered while I was in labor, and my room smelt SO good, and I couldn't eat it! I was PISSED! LOL And they'll deliver to the hospital.

After you deliver, they give you a card and H's meal is free, it's just one meal though. If you want pancakes you have to say how many you want and what not. It's not bad food, but you can't expect much for hospital food :)

Plus, I think there is a fridge in the room, so you'll be able to bring your own stuff in to if you want.

  • This sounds very promising!  I was thinking we could probably share meals.  Good info!

And Ashley - maybe you got the last Rhogam shot and that's why it took them so long - they had to find one - LOL!

  • Honestly, I thought it was horrible. After labor and delivery I wanted a hot beef sandwich and they just so happend to have that on their menu. I ordered it and couldn't even eat it because it was so nasty, and I was HUNGRY! The gravy and potatoes were imitation and the meat was super dry.  None of my other meals were any better.

But, besides the food our experience at Methodist was really positive, so I wouldn't let that determine your decision. :-) You can always order in food.

  • From someone who eats at Methodist's cafeteria 2-3 times a week.... the head chef recently left, and sadly the quality of some things has gone downhill.

You're safe with pizza, deep fried stuff (chicken tenders, fries, etc.), and grilled stuff (ie burgers). Avoid the soup and anything Asian. Everything else is hit or miss.

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • The last time I ate there was about a year ago when I was on clinical at Blank...I thought the food was yummy and that they had a good selection.
  • I remember the omlets, salads, sandwichs, and pizza being good. Potatos and gravy= bad.

For the most part DH just ate off my plates, and got a sandwich at the atrimum.
