Working moms who work out

When do you work out, and what do you do?

I'm currently doing Kosama at 5:00 am (DH leaves the house at 6:30 so I need to by done by then).  When Kosama is over, I want to continue working out regularly, but can't figure out where to fit it into my day. As much as I wish I could continue the early morning thing, I don't think it's for me... I can't break my night owl tendencies and I always feel sleep deprived. So I'm trying to figure out when/how to work out without affecting my time with the kids. I suppose I could do lunchtime but the idea of getting all sweaty in the middle of the day isn't ideal either.

I'm curious how other people work it into their schedule. TIA!

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.

Re: Working moms who work out

  • I consider myself a working mom because trust me, there is no time for organized work outs during the day, just kid chasing ;-). I try to work out around 8:30...DH puts Jovie to bed and Ella loves to attempt to do Zumba with me. I may be getting a membership to Snap which is about 1/2block from my house and I am going to try and keep it around the same time. I cannot force myself out of bed in the AM! Also, that is awesome you are doing Kosama! I always want to, but the thought of getting myt 'fat picture' taken makes me panic!! Great job!!
  • We bought memberships at Snap recently, and I've been to the one on 42nd Street a few times.  Since I take a vanpool to/from work in Ames, mid-day isn't an option for me... It seems evening (after DD is asleep) is going to be my best time.

Kudos to you for doing Kosama!  I would love to hear about your experience.

If you end up deciding on evening workouts, let me know... I'd love to have a workout buddy.  My membership at Snap expires at the end of January, so I'd be up for trying something different, too...

  • When I worked, I lifted weights at lunch time. I didn't get too sweaty just lifting. Then I'd follow it with a walk on the elliptical at a good incline but not fast. That way I didn't sweat much either. I'd shower my body but not my hair after that and return to my office.

  • I apologize if anyone took offense to "working moms." I know SAHMs work their tails off! I should have said "moms who work outside the home."

    Thanks for the input, everyone!

  • How do you like Kosama? I've thought about doing it and so has DH..

Anyway, I pretty much do was MrsReem said... although I like to run so I just run and then shower afterwards or try to stick to more low impact cardio.. I don't sweat a lot so its not a big deal to me.. Night time is out of the question because after the kids go to bed is my time with DH and my time to just relax..

  • H and I have a deal, he gets to go to the gym 1st thing in the AM, he's up at 430 to be at the gym @5 and home before 630 to take El to daycare.

I go right after work, I work from 7-330, so does H. So he picks up the kido, and I head to the gym, I'm usually home by5 or before. We belong to Aspen, so the one closest to our house is 24hr which is nice, the other one by our house opens at 5 and closes by 10 during the week.

I have worked out over lunch, I'll run and do some weights, by running first and then doing weights, it gives my body time to cool off before I rinse off in the locker room. I just wash the 4major food groups, lol, that's what H calls it. And head back up to work. On the days I knew I was going to work out at work, I'd wear my hair up already, so if I came back from the gym and my hair was up it wouldn't be AS weird, kwim?

If you're joining a gym, could you join one that has a daycare? H and I LOVE to work out together. And I like taking El to the Kids Klub, becuse it gives her a chance to play with kids that aren't regular daycare kids. - if that makes sense?

  • A few people asked how I like Kosama...

I like it pretty well. I did it because I was in the worst shape of my life and I wanted a way to jump start myself back into the realm of fitness. I have definitely accomplished that. Now, on days I don't work out, I feel antsy. So the motivation is back... that's good.

There are a few things about it that probably aren't the best fit for me. Like, working out 6 days a week. Sometimes my knees hurt, like I'm overdoing it. Also, it's INTENSE. Before I had kids, I did classes at the gym (kickboxing, etc.) that were tough but enjoyable. Some of the Kosama workouts are beyond enjoyment. The majority of people in my class are hard core fitness fanatics who have been doing this every day for a year and their bodies show it. That's just not me.

I think my class is known for being the toughest, so different instructors and times might be different. And they're totally cool if you take breaks or do modified versions of the hard stuff.

So, long story short, I'm glad I'm doing it, I've met a few nice people, I'm gaining what I hoped to gain (or should I say losing), but I won't be devastated when it's done at the end of Dec. I'm pretty confident the motivation will carry through to a fitness plan that's a better fit for me.

  • My old job was flexible enough for me to work out over lunch.   A bonus was they had a spin class duing the lunch hour.  I would pull up my hair for class and it wouldn't get too sweaty - I'd shower after not getting my hair wet.   I'm also not a "sweater"  it takes a lot for me to break a sweat.

Unfortunatly my new job isn't so flexible.   I was lucky enough to team up with a neighbor to be buddies and we started "wogging" in August.   We still go 2-3 times per week and I try to get on my treadmil another 1-2 times.  I know we won't be able to go outside all winter, but we've already talked about getting together those 2-3 nights and doing a workout video together or something.    We'll see what happens.  I know for me mentally I need to work out so I'll have to find something that will work.

  • I'm not a morning exercise person, either.  I've tried it and it isn't for me.  When I was running (and when I start running again), I did it at night after Natalie went to bed, or right before while DH was entertaining her.  This meant a little later night for me since I couldn't wind right down for bed, but it worked for me and I never felt sleep deprived.

  • We are blessed to have a fitness center on site at my work.  I go down and work out over the lunch hour, or I work through lunch and then go down right before I leave for the day.  The fitness center offers classes so I do yoga 3x a week, then I run the other two days to get in some cardio workout.  If I'm feeling really ambitious I'll do a little light weight lifting after I run.

The fitness center has a locker room with showers, towels, etc. so working out at lunch isn't that big of a deal.  I don't really style my hair or wear makup so it doesn't take that long to rinse off, throw my hair up, get dressed and get back to my desk.

It has really been a lifesaver because I can't get up any earlier and working out once I get home is an impossibility.
