Germany Bumps/Mums
Hey there, I need a little clarification!
I'm getting ready to set up my initial prenatal visit in Frankfurt, but am limited to providers covered by our US insurance. The list of covered providers that our insurance put together for us reflects a a bit of a cultural disconnect, as it includes Hebamme as well as Frauenarzt(in), though it lists them all as OB/GYN!
So my question is, can I go to either type of provider (like in the US), or do I need to go to a Frauenarzt(in) specifically for my initial prenatal appointment. In other words, if I call to make my initial appointment with a midwife, will they do the telephone-equivalent of giving me the ol' German-side-eye

In Germans the midwives (Hebammen) and OB/GYNs (Frauen?rzte) do complementary care. The OB is generally in charge of the purely medical side (bloodwork, ultrasounds, etc) while the Hebamme is more there for you emotionally and for your well-being. My Hebamme does a lot of acupuncture and homeopathic therapy. I went along with it, and some of it seemed to help some of the problems I was having, but the biggest help for me was just that she took care of the emotional side of things. You'd have to check with your US provider, but in Germany it's normal for the insurance to cover 16 postpartum visits by the Hebamme. She comes to your house and answers any questions you have while making sure that both you and the baby aren't having any problems you need to have checked out (mine kept an eye on my c/s scar and she was the one who took out the stitches).
As for the initial appt, I don't think it matters who you call first. Again, it's normal to do complementary care since Hebammes don't have ultrasounds or (typically) do bloodwork. Hope that helps!

We move back to the states at the end of the month, where I'll find a midwife. I want to get my prenatal care started over here, as I'll be 11 or 12 weeks by the time I could see someone back home, and I'm not comfortable with waiting that long to get this party started
