gym etiquette question and ellipitical question

i just joined a gym. it's been awhile. first, do you need to wipe down machines like treadmills if you don't sweat on them? i wasn't sure so i did. it's not like i didn't get a workout, but i wasn't dripping at all. i just wiped down the handrails since i touched those, but it felt sort of silly because i had barely touched them.

also, why can't i get the elliptical? i have never been able to master this machine. i always feel like my feet are going to fall off the pedals. i was bummed to learn that the gym i joined doesn't even have non-elliptical steppers anymore. i did the elliptical but only for 2 minutes then went onto the machine that looks like a staircase. people seem to fly on these ellipticals so it makes me sad i can't get with it.

Me:39 Dx LPD, Fibroid, AMA and all that goes with that. H:37 Dx low motility and low morphology. TTC since 3/12. Clomid 8/12 and 9/12: BFN. 11/12 on a break for Myomectomy sched. 11/26. Resume TTC early 2013.

  • I always wipe the machines down even if I don't get all that sweaty.  I usually just wipe the parts I touch down.

As for the elliptical I don't really like it anyway.  I feel like it is an unnatural motion and just doesn't feel right to me.  Plus I feel like when I really get going the machine picks up all the momentum and it is the machine doing half the work not me.

  • Congrats on joining! I hope you like it enough to stick with it.

Yes on wiping down the machines.. Germs and you do sweat even if it's just a little.

I also don't like the elliptical. Unnatural to me also plus I don't like to work out my legs too much since they tend to bulk up rather than slim down.

  • I like ellipticals. Most machines I have used have little ledges on the petals so you don't feel like your feet are going to slide out.

Absolutely clean the machine after use.

    Good luck with the gym!

  • Does the gym have AMT's or Arc Trainers?  Those are similar to ellipticals but are more realistic in the motions.  Maybe you would like those better.
  • I love the elliptical. I tried to use this machine that was part elliptical part stair stepper and I thought it was going to kill me!!!

  • Definitely wipe it down because not everyone does and the germs are there and sweat from your hands...I usually would wipe it down before I got on it in case someone didn't before me.

I love love love the elliptical so I think I'm in the minority...that was the best thing for my knee because pounding on a treadmill kills them and I hate staying in the same place.

I like to do backwards to get a work out all around as well.

  • Congrats on joining! As for wiping down, definitely always do.

Question for you.. do you have "narrow" hips? I have an easy time on the eliptical, and my hips are on the wider side. A good friend of mine has more narrow shaped hips, and she can't get into the swing of it. Just a thought on why you may not be comfortable on it..
