? for ladies who have had a m/c

I had an early miscarriage at 5w3d and am going in for more bloodwork today to confirm. When I spoke the midwife yesterday they told me they recommend waiting 3 regular cycles before trying again. I've seen different time frames different places and am wondering what you were told. I'll obviously talk to the midwives more about it this afternoon but just want to hear others experience. Thanks!

Re: ? for ladies who have had a m/c

  • Sorry, Kate. *hugs*

I only ever had to wait one cycle.  We waited like three on the last one because I just couldn't handle it.

  • I miscarried before my first at 8.5wks. I was told to wait 1 cycle but we didn't really. I did have one cycle before getting pg again.
  • First I am soo sorry for your loss.

I've had a couple of different losses as far as timing and method.

If you had a natural early loss (no D&C) I think 3 cycles is extreme.

When there's a total removal of the uterine lining and it's contents via D&C I understand that they want you to wait to make sure that your uterus is back up to par to avoid having another loss but with a super early loss that you pass naturally I was told we could try again right away.

Did you ever have betas drawn?

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • So sorry.

I have had two, one was at 7w3d and the other was around 5w5d. I was emotionally not ready after the 7w one for at least two months, while the 5w5d one, I was ready sooner.

You also have to make sure your blood numbers are back down, and that can sometimes drive how long it takes for your body to be ready, though with an early loss, the numbers should fall pretty quick.

Ultimately it is up to you and I think they often recommend that long from an emotional point of view, so that if you did get pg again and had a m/c because your body wasn't ready, it may be more difficult emotionally.

  • My doctor's rule of thumb was to wait for as long as I was pregnant. Since most of my losses were early, it was only 1-2 cycles.

The latest data show there is no need to wait and, in fact, that pregnancy success is higher if you are pregnant again within 6 months. Article:   http://www.webmd.com/baby/news/20100805/study-no-need-delay-pregnancy-after-miscarriage  Sorry I can't Clicky - on my iPad.

I'm so sorry for your loss and wish you future success.

  • I had a missed m/c at 8 w 2 days and after my D&C, my Dr. said I only needed one "regular" cycle before trying again.  It seems 1-3 cycles is average wait time that Doctors recommend.....unless you have a molar or partial molar, but unlikely this early on.  So sorry for your loss.  :(

  • Thanks ladies. I started spotting on Saturday and had betas on Monday and my hcg was only 43 and progesterone at .7. I have a redraw this afternoon. I really never bled more than a light period so I feel the 3 months thing is a little extreme. I really appreciate everyone sharing.

  • oh, sorry to hear that.  Left Hug  I had a chemical as well and aside from making sure it passed, my OB/GYN gave me green light to start trying immediately.  In fact, DS was conceived the very next cycle/month after my m/c.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. :( I had 3 m/c's - 2 at 10-11 weeks and 1 CP at 5 weeks. With the longer ones I waited one cycle before TTC again and with the CP I did not wait any at all. In fact DD#1 was conceived directly after the CP. GL!
  • I was told to wait one cycle, but when I pressed for reasoning behind that, the OB told me it was perfectly fine not to wait at all, they just recommended the one cycle for dating purposes.  That said, I found that I just couldn't really try right after so in essence we waited one cycle on purpose.  Second DH was gone.  And we conceived on the third (first where we actually tried).  Sorry for your loss, it sucks.

  • First, I'm so sorry! Hugs! Second, I found out I had a missed m/c at 10.5 weeks (baby measured 7w). My midwife recommended waiting one cycle after my d/c, but when I went to the MD for the post-op appt, she told me there was no need to wait and that most people suggested that for emotional healing and dating purposes. I decided to trust my body and see what happened and we conceived when I ovulated about 3 weeks after the d/c. Never had a period.

They also never checked my betas after, but when I tested positive, that's when they checked my betas.

  • I'm so sorry you are going through this.

When I had a m/c it was an unplanned preg. so I wasn't going to try again immediately. Guess I don't have a lot of advice other than to say to give yourself time to grieve.

  • I'm sorry.  :(

    I was told 3 cycles, but I had a D&C and was a mess.

You will want to wait until your levels are down to 0, and sometimes that can take a while.

A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I was also told to wait 1 cycle, and I had to have a D&C.

  • Thanks again. I talked to the midwife yesterday and she said it really is up to us and that one cycle would be fine and I'm ok with that. I really appreciate everyone sharing.

  • So sorry for your loss. I was also told 3 months but only one was a d&c. My Dr said it was to let my body re-cooperate or something. I did go on to have a healthy pg w/out a cycle in between.
