At what age / life stage is this inappropriate?

a small, tasteful (hopefully!) nose ring?

like this:

Supplemental questions:

1. Does it matter what the rest of your personal style is like?

2. Will your nose grow back together and look normal if you take it out and leave it out?

Re: At what age / life stage is this inappropriate?

  • I think it depends on your style.  I couldn't pull one off buy my BFF has one and just got it last year at 39. It suits her perfectly.

  • I could not pull it off.

A coworker got one recently and it screamed tiny, tiny midlife crisis on her.

My super awesome yoga teacher friend (also a mom, so that's not it) could totally rock it.

I can still see the holes in my ears even though I haven't wore ear rings for years, so I think you'd be able to see the hole even if you stopped using it.

  • I love a nose ring, especially something simple like that.  If I liked my nose more I would have gotten one when I was younger, and I don't think it matters how old you are, more about your personal style.
  • I'm 33 and I got mine last year.  It's a tiny stud, and I love it.  I worried that I was too old to do it, and then I realized I wasn't getting younger and I still wanted it, so I took the plunge.  As far as personal style goes, mine's all over the place.  I work in public relations, so my weekday uniform involves a lot of skirts and cardigans.  Evenings and weekends, it's a different thing entirely, but regardless of what I'm wearing, the nose stud never looks out of place.

Removing  it should leave minimal scarring -- probably none at all, unless it gets very badly infected or somehow messed up.

Go for it!  It barely hurt at all* and was easy to heal.  I'm so glad I got mine, and I wish I'd done it 10 years before.  Find a reputable shop with a good piercer and have a conversation about it.  If you get a good feeling, do it!

    * I can tolerate a great deal of pain, though.  I've got a fair amount of piercings and tattoos, and it's rare that I bat an eye.  The nose was particularly easy, though.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

This alone would keep me from doing it.

I kind of want to try it, but only if it won't leave a trace if I don't like it and decide to take it out.

I agree with all of this. My style is all over the place as well, but I think the nose stud looks cute with everything. Part of my wardrobe is classic/modest, and the other part is casual, brightly-colored, or edgy.

I also agree that the nose was one of the easier piercings, and I've got several. It really only hurt for the second that it took to get the needle through and the ring in.

Whatever parlor you go to, make sure they give you a stud either L shaped post or the fish tail; otherwise, the straight post could easily fall out while you sleep, and it would close up probably before you even noticed it was out.

I agree with this.  Some people that I know can totally rock them!  With my crazy allergies and the sniffles that come with them, I knew it would never even be an option to consider for me.

  • I think it just depends on your personal style. I can see someone with more of an edgy style or very trendy wearing it. I think I would look goofy with one but some people can really pull it off.

  • This is funny to me at this very moment.  I say get it! It's completely temporary and even the small hole that MAY stay open if you rock it long enough is so small it wouldn't be this crazy hole that reminds you of this piercing forever.

The reason this is funny to me is because I JUST got the below on Friday night and I'm truning 29 next month.  It fits my personality and is also hidden at work with my hair down.  I absolutely love it, even though I admit that I have / will get the side eye because of my age.

which will look like this in 4 weeks once it's healed...

  • I agree that personal style matters more than age.  You also need to think about your profession.  If you are in a creative field you would be able to get away with it more.

Ear scarring isn't similar.  Most people get their lobes pierced with a piercing gun, which leaves a lot more scar tissue than a carefully inserted needle.  Needles are precise and leave little damage.  The gun essentially forces the relatively blunt earring post through your skin, which makes healing more difficult and scarring more visable.   The aftermath isn't close to comparable.

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

Hey I just did that too! About two weeks ago. Big Smile And that same picture was my inspiration. That piercing isn't very common around here; I had never seen it before this pic, and then I got it done the next day. I love it!

I'm not trying to talk you into anything, I promise!

Let me know if you have any questions.  Like I said, I've got a fair amount of piercings and tattoos -- while still maintaining an air of normalcy and professionalism -- so I might be able to shed some light.

Did you have to get hoops as well, because of swelling / healing?  I was a little bummed because I had no idea that was the case.

I came across it on pinterest I guess about a month ago and was telling my cousin about it on Friday night and when I showed her that pic, we walked to the tattoo shop and both got it lol  I don't personally know anyone with it, besides her now.  The piercer (this was in Morgantown, WV) did mention that it's quickly going to become the 2011 belly button because girls can't help but like it lol

Yes, I have the tiny hoops as well. When I posted that pic on facebook and said I was going to do it, my friend texted me and said she wanted it too. So we made and appointment the next day.

The hoops wouldn't work for her ears though, so the guy gave her curved bars. It took him forever to get the tiny ball on the second one. She was in the chair for like 45 minutes and all the tugging hurt her ear more than it should have.

A different guy did mine though, and he was done within 10 minutes. I was glad! lol

Same thing with my cousin!!  Her second one just would not meet for the ball to go in so he had to move it around a LOT and the blood was just rushing out.  It was terrible.  I was SO thankful I went first because I would have chickened out if I saw that first lol

I agree with this.  However, I work in a very non creative field (natural gas utility) and I work daily with customers.  I have wanted one for years.  One day I just finally decided I was going to do it (after checking our policies and finding nothing saying I couldn't have one).  Some of my other employees that just give me a hard time about everything because they know they can "push my buttons" give me a hard time about it, but my boss or upper management has never said anything about it.  In fact, the first day I had it at work I went to my friend's cube and the President of the company was there also.  She said oh I like your piercing.  I was freaking out a bit because I didn't want to draw attention to it since Pres. was right there.  He actually said, oh that's really cool.  I like it.

I did have an interview in a different state but still with the same company last month and put in a clear stud just in case.

To actually answer your question about age/style -- I'm actually fairly conservative in my dress and don't consider myself a real creative person so much, but I get compliments on it a lot.  I don't think it looks weird or out of place on me at all!

*The only way to dream is big*
  • I had one a few years ago and took it out because I'm too much of a spazz and the L stud kept falling out/I couldn't stop touching my nose/I got bored with it. It was pretty inexpensive, hardly hurt at all, and there is no noticeable scar.

Around these parts, everyone and her mother has her nose pierced, so it's really not a big deal professionally, especially not a cute little stud like that. A ring might be a different story.

  • According to all PP (maybe save 1) I think you are safe if you want to get one. Agree with PP that I think the only area to be cognisant about is your workplace. You may get a side eye if it is ultra conservative company.

Not sure if anyone said, yes I got lazy and stopped reading after the post I quoted lol, but what about getting one of those little magnetic ones and trying it on for a day at home and see what you think? It would give you an idea of how it will look minus the hole lol!

  • Sorry to butt in. I stumbled in to the wrong board. Just wanted to say I think it really depends on the person. I used to like to edit piercings on to my face using photoshop etc. Anyways I don't think that it looks unprofessional on myself and I actually have them on both sides.

My office does not permit visible piercings or tattoos, period. What do you do for a living?
