Smelly

A temp who has been working in my group for the past 6 month has serious body odor. She lives with a bunch of cats and it's a mix of that and a dirty musky scent. I am very sensitive to smells and the smell usually gives me a migraine where it really affects my work day. I have bought air fresheners for my cube and even have a personal fan but nothing works. My supervisor is aware of this issue as she has called me into her office on a couple of occasions and has asked me if this woman has body odor and if it is affecting me. I have been honest with her each time trying to be as respectful as possible never bringing up the issue myself. Since she is a temp, my supervisior is not able to talk with her one on one about this and needs to formally issue a verbal complaint with her temp agency. She has done this a couple times now but the smell still lurks everyday. I do not want to go to my supervisor as she is already aware of this situation however, the smell makes me sick and gives me the worst headaches! I need advice on what to do. Help!

Re: Smelly

  • Does your company have a policy that says they can't speak to the employee without going through the temp agency?  That sucks.  When we have temps and they're causing an issue, we just tell them.

Maybe your supervisor is looking for more people to corroborate the smelly odor for when she makes a complaint.  You know your work environment better than anyone - so I can only speak for my work environment.  Here, I would probably sit down with my supervisor and state that it's causing me physical discomfort (migraine) and impacting my performance on the job.

Perhaps you can speak with  HR and they can give you better direction?

  • I feel you.  My CW who sits at the cube across from me smells so badly, that I can smell him as soon as he walks off of the elevator into our office.  My boss agrees & other CWs do too.  He is not a temp, he is FT and nobody will say anything to him.  I went to Walmart & bought a $5 candle warmer, 2 mini candles and a cedar-scented reed diffuser.  It has helped to drown out his odor somewhat but still the odor lingers into my cube.

I don't really have any advice for you, as I have not found a solution for the same problem.  Just wanted to sympathize & commiserate w/you!
