Elf on a shelf.

Does anyone else think this is super creepy idea?

Re: Elf on a shelf.

  • I know a lot of people who do that with their EOAS.  Apparently I'm into creepy stuff.

  • I like the EOAS, but I don't have one yet.  I find it creepier that her kid is named Zephan.  Sorry to all you Zephan lovers out there, but that one is just too much for me.

  • I think that particular elf is creepy, but a friend of mine has different elves for her twins and I think they are cuter. :)

  • I guess I meant the whole idea of an inanimate object watching over your kids, to me, is creepy. /shrug

    LOL@ Zephan.

  • I think its cute.

  • I guess it's a little creepy but I totally love our Elf on the Shelf (aka "Buddy"..I know so original right?)  And it is working WONDERS this year when the boys are bad!  Plus they really like waking up to find Buddy in different places!
  • We got an EOAS for the twins.  I'm excited to get started with it.  They probably wont really get it this year, but I think it's a fun idea!

  • I've never heard of it until this year but I think it's maybe a little creepy but can be done in a cute way.  I'll probably do it with my girl when she is older.

  • I linked it in the OP. :P
  • This reminds me of a story a family friend told us about their EOAS.  Their kids were young enough that they thought it really was real and was watching over them at Christmas time.  They we told that they were not allowed to touch the elf because Santa would find out.  The parents changed his hiding spot every night so this kids would find him in the morning.

The mom chose to sneak in and out the elf on the fan in the kids room.  When the kids woke up, they turned on the light/fan in their bedroom and the elf went flying off.  The kids ran out of the room, being careful not to touch the elf screaming "He's dead, Mark's (that's what they named their elf) dead!!"

Personally I like the idea of EOAS.  I have one for MacKenzie.  Her (ours has a skirt) name is Baby (MacKenzie named her) and she is sitting on our TV cabinet at the moment.

    ROFL!! Oh, those poor kids.

I just keep thinking of the episode of the League where the EOAS was named Kegel. I just can't take it seriously.

  • I was absolutely creeped out by it, too. He's got a definite creepy little stare, too. And the whole "I'm watching you thing," felt a little weird . But I guess that's really no different than "Santa's watching."

My mom got one for us last year, and I was kind of meh about it, but this year is totally different. Lily is so into it and loves to see where he is every morning. She says good-bye to him when we leave, too, which is cute. I've seen a lot of ideas to put your elf like you linked here and on Pinterest, and that makes it a little more fun for us, too.

So basically, yes, he's a bit creepy, but there have been so many benefits. She's excited to go find him in the morning, so we have a happy Lily in the morning. I've used the "he's watching you" card several times and tantrums have been averted. Even if I only get this for a month, I'll take it. It's the most wonderful month of the year.

She named her elf Bob. Don't ask me where that came from, but it's better than Zephan or whatever, which is not an acceptable name for an elf doll, much less a human.

  • Elf on the Shelf..yea we have it, his name is Elfin.  This is year 2 and Ava is over him.  She wants to touch him (which we are trying firmly to communicate that he will lose his magical powers if she does).  Alas the "Elfin's watching you" card does not work with her either.  She wants money, presents, candy or cake

She turns 3 on Friday.  Yay for 3 being worse than the terrible two's.  I hope my son enjoys Elf on the Shelf more than my difficult diva of a daughter.

PS on a side note I do have to use my ninja skills in the morning to hide the damn thing before she wakes up.  This morning she woke up before I had a chance to hide him so I had to distract her while I climbed stuff to get him and then re-hide him again quickly.  His new spot today was rather lame-o if I do say so myself lol.

  • I think this is awesome! The "actual" EOAS ARE creepy though.

  • I'm sorry but I don't get the appeal.  Feeling like someone is watching you is just too creepy and big brotherish for me.
