  This was huge a while ago but no so much now. There are still jobs that look specifically for Six Sigma trained people. There are quite a few contract job which work with it as well.

  I was thinking the same thing about getting a project management certification - that by the time I got one in a year or two it would be out of style already. 

  I had a co-worker that had six sigma and I don't think it mattered on her resume but she said it did help her be a good manager.

  Agreed that it depends on company/industry. Six Sigma and PMP still mean something pretty substantial in government work which in where I work.   Also, I do think that certifications have the added benefit of showing new employers that you are willing to invest in improving your skills as well as can be used to fill a gap in your resume (I once interviewed a computer programmer for a deputy director position who got a PMP certification to help  him understand the managing of a project, something he didn't gain in school.  He got the job!)

  Ditto cmo4u3.  If you are in industrial engineering, project management, change management, financial analysis, comptrolling, etc, I recommend both Six Sigma and PMP over going back to college.  Most importantly, these certifications are not just in name only-there is significant training and testing with both; what you learn from them will improve how you do your job, making you a better candidate whether the certifications help or not.  HTH!
