Two questions...
one, tips for a plugged duct besides heat and massage while nursing?
two, how do I know what size flange to use for my pump??? I don't want to have to make another trip to the LC, but the Medela video said to consult one to make sure I'm using the right size. ugh. I pumped for the first time today and it was tricky. I had to just do one side at a time, I don't have enough hands to hold the flanges on and then press the button when the milk starts, and massage my plugged duct. I got 2 oz in like 3 minutes but then it seemed like the milk stopped and it felt uncomfortable so I stopped. Any advice?
Re: BFing help!
Where did you get it from? I returned my bras I got with you to Kohls since they gave me massive sores.
While breastfeeding try to make sure Ada's nose is pointed towards the general direction of the plugged duct. You can also try a hot shower and massage the duct. I have also heard (Kellymom) that you can add Lecithin supplement it is supposed to help avoid/reduce them.
Good luck, I know they suck!
I'm no help with the clogged duct, as I never had that issue. I hope it clears up soon!
I found this article on finding the right size flange, but it sounds like an LC may be the best resource if you aren't sure. I have always been able to use the one that came with my PIS. As for needing eight hands (ha) to pump, I've been able to pump one handed without a bra or the rubber band trick (see Kelly mom). If you stretch your arm across your chest, you can use your forearm to hold the one closest to the arm and then your hand to hold the other. So I'm right handed, so I use my left forearm to hold the left side, and then my left hand to hold my right side. I pump while driving all the time, and it's never been an issue. (I know that sounds so dangerous, but I figure I can always drop them if I need to... I'd just have a big cleanup!) This leaves your dominant hand free to press the letdown button, massage, read, etc.
Two ounces in three minutes sounds good for how young Ada is, but it shouldn't really be uncomfortable when you aren't producing milk. Does it actually hurt or is it just weird feeling?

I wasn't able to nurse and only pumped for about 4 weeks. I had a manual pump that the hospital gave me. I had a clogged duct from the start, so I pumped while in the shower while massaging the duct.
C uses the flanges that came with the pump - there was a photo somewhere (maybe in the medela literature) about how your nipples should fit in them - I'm sure its online somewhere (but i dont think i can search for it at work).
She EPs, so it might not be as relevant for you, but that hands-free bustier has been a godsend. she can work on the computer etc with it. she either folds down the bra/tank or pulls it up. she still wears nursing sports bras/tanks a lot of time time even though she's not nursing bc they're less cumbersome for pumping.
NURSE ON ALL 4's! yes, it sounds silly but it will work probably the first time you do it.
Have her nose point towards the clog, if that doesn't work flip her around so her chin points towards the clog.
Honestly the first 1-2x you nurse like that it will likely come out.
After it comes unclogged then go in the bathroom and look at your nipple and squeeze from your breast out to your nipple and if you see something white but not milk coming out, pick it out and you'll likely get another big gush (either go into a bottle or down the drain)
LMK how it goes!
Everyone has already suggested what I would. The shower helped me the most, but I never got them really bad. Nursing on your knees sounds funny, but the gravity really does help.
Medela has a pamphlet that came with my pump that discussed Falange size. I actually had to drop a size just before M turned a year. if it hurst, try turning down suction slightly. It shouldn't hurt to pump.
I think Ada needs more head control for me to do this. I'm trying to just lean over her and let my breast hang so that gravity can help, but I could not get her to latch while I was on all fours like that.
The lump is still there, no bigger, no smaller and it still hurts a lot when I press on it.
I'm hoping it will clear up with continued heat and massage.
