Fert. Docs/Clinics- Help!

This is somewhat of a cross-post..

For those of you who've gone through fertility treatments, could you tell me which clinic/RE you went to? And if you've had any negative experiences with any doctors, could you tell me who and why? (Feel free to PM/FB msg/email me if you don't want the info on the board)

And was cost ever a factor in who you decided to go to? Did you shop around to see whose prices were best, or was it more important to go to a highly regarded doctor, no matter what the cost?

Thanks so much for any info!

Re: Fert. Docs/Clinics- Help!

  • Wouldn't your insurance be the determining factor on expense?

It's my understanding that most insurance companies don't cover any fertility treatments.  Or at least mine didn't cover anything in regards to infertility.  Sucks.

  • Like Kathy said, most insurance policies cover nothing related to infertilty. It's awesome!
  • When I was exploring fertility treatments, Blossom helped me out a lot with advice.  Obviously I wouldn't have used her RE but her info was helpful.  Hopefully she will chime in with some info for you.

It's funny that you mention that, I found a post from last year that I saved where Jessica/blossom had told me about her doctor and gave me a lot of info. So I guess I'm good on her info unless she has more to chime in with, haha.

I think really I'm just looking for someone to tell me a magical way to reduce the cost of this bullsht but that doesn't exist, lol.

    It is frustrating.

I have read of people apply for jobs because their insurance policies DO cover fertility treatments.  I have no idea how one finds those jobs but are you interested in switching careers?  LOL.  I have also heard of people going to Panama (or other countries) for treatments because they are cheaper.......and you get a vacation out of it.

I know the RE I was considering going to in San Antonio was MUCH, MUCH cheaper than most doctors.  So I think it would be worth it to shop around.

Have they given you a diagnosis?  Or are you what they consider unexplained infertility?

I tell you, those 18 months of TTC baby #2 were very hard on me.  At the end there, I was considering throwing in the towel.  The thought of having to deal another day with the heartache of it was beginning to become overwhelming.  I can't tell you how many nights I cried over it.  Most days I was numb to it but every so often it would all catch up to me.

I am really rooting for your BFP.  I am praying that your TTC journey will be short from here on out.

  • I don't have much to contribute, but I really wanted to say good luck in whatever you do!!

I also want to say that I think IF treatment might be something you can use FSA/HSA money for, if it's not covered by insurance. While that's still self-pay, it would make it easier to manage, and it saves a little bit because it's pretax dollars.

  • Thanks for thinking of me :)

I wish I had MORE advice for you, Lauren, but I think I gave you all I had. But I do sincerely recommend Reproductive Medicine Group. I have been seeing Dr. Goodman since I was 17. I was bounced around from gyno to gyno since I still hadn't gotten AF. One gyno even tried to convince my mother I had an eating disorder and that's why I hadn't started yet. Ughhh!!!!! But finally Dr. Goodman diagnosed me and I have seen her for my annual ever since. When H and I were ready to get PG I knew she would be the one to make it happen.

I never shopped around and I am not sure how RMG compares to other places but I can tell you that for us, it was worth every penny!

Unexplained as of now :( I'm sure there's a reason though.

  • I had PCOS and was referred to an RE, Dr. Mayer at USF Womans Health Care. He's great and explain everything that is possible ( evn draws diagrams for better understanding). He didn't jumped into diagnosing me right away as someone who is dealing with infertility he wanted to check all basis. I went thru tests after tests and he came into a Semi-diagnosis of bring inovulatory. That my pituitary gland is not communicating with reproductive system therefore, my follicles don't mature. After a round of Clomid and an attempt for an IUI ( I said attempt because when I found out my insurance isn't covering it I stopped for a sec and opted not to continue, I didn't want to spend $500 that day lol but I did spend $200 for the U/S that basically just confirmed the Clomid didn't work. I basically threw in the towel and said I'm taking a break! Then here we are 22 weeks pregnant : ).

Anyways, I highly recommend Dr. Mayer as far as his professionalism, cost wise I have nothing to compare with so I'm not see how reasonable the price is.

Goodlck and hope you get BFP soon.

Junie, so you got your BFP while not on any meds?  Did you have any side effects from Clomid?
