How often should you replace pillows and duvets?

So I recently found out you're suppose to replace mesh bath sponges every two months because of bacteria and stuff, and now I'm paranoid that there are lots of other things I'm suppose to replace more frequently than I thought. I have a goose down duvet and goose down pillows that I wash regularly. I've had them for 6.5 years and they're all in good working order, but now I'm wondering if I'm suppose to replace these at some point just for gps. This is probably really dumb, but do I need to worry about dust mites and dead skin if I wash them or a regular basis?

Re: How often should you replace pillows and duvets?

  • If you let the mesh bath puff dry completely between uses...you're good.

I always use a cover on our duvets, which I take off and wash every week.  I wash our duvets themselves, probably once a year or so.

Down pillows, I use two pillow protectors on them, as well as a pillowcase (again washed every week).

I'm not really worried about bacteria/dust mites to be honest...I'll replace them if/when they're not working anymore.
  • I agree with PP, we wash our duvet cover once a week or every 2 depending on if we are home or away during this time. Pillow cases are washed every week. Depending on the pillow you can throw them in the dryer to kill anything that may be in them if your worried about mites. I just bought all new pillows for our beds, but thats because they were old and worn, not because I was worried about mites

  • I keep our pillows in allergen protectors. I wash the pillowcases and protectors every week, and the pillows every month. I replace the pillows when they're worn and don't bounce back into shape.

I replace my mesh bath sponge every month.

  • I don't worry about it. You're washing it, I call it clean. I would replace them when they start leaking feathers, not when someone who sells the things says they should be replaced!

  • I wouldn't worry about the comforters/pillows.  If you use regular sponges - they should be replaced often.  Toothbrushes...
