Fashion Help! (PIP)

So....my Holiday party is tonight.  Kinda sneaked up on me (thought it was next Thursday).  It's in NYC (obvs) and is listed as semi-formal.  A lot of the girls really go all out and get decked.  I haven't gone in two years but I'm going tonight.  I am far fatter than I've ever been so nothing looks good - but I'm trying to decide what I can get away with wearing.  I don't really love dresses on me (some are OK) and I don't do skirts ever.  I have a new dressy top (silky fabric, red with black lace design) that I can wear with black slacks.  I made an appt to get my hair blown out and I'll dress it up with jewelry, nice bag, etc.  You think that works?

I also don't ever wear heels, so i'll be in flats and I don't have any dressy ones, so I'll probably be in these.  Do I try to find new ones today?

Shirt    Shoes

What say you (knowing that I will never be as decked as the other girls, single gals mostly, out for a night on the town...).  Ok as is?  Get new shoes? Get a dressier outfit?

Re: Fashion Help! (PIP)

  • Shirt and black pants is cute! You will look 100 times better to others if you are comfortable in your outfit than you would in an outfit that you are pretending to be confident in. . . if that makes any sense.

Not a huge fan of the shoes, I'd try to find a pair in similar style, but red! :)

Plus, if you are anything like me I HATE shopping for a new outfit the day I need a new outfit. I always end up feeling fat/frumpy/depressed in the dressing room which makes me loath the idea of going out all togheter.

Put on your outfit, some accessories, do your hair and make-up all cute, and go have fun! You deserve a night out, feeling fab!

  • If it is semi-formal, I think it depends on the pants.  Are they just suit pants?  Or are they the more flowy chiffon or something type pants?  I would probably go with something nicer than regular suit pants.

I agree. In fact I think you should mail them to me and I'll figure out something to do with them.

But seriously I think dress pants/dressy top will be fine. Take pictures. I want to see what a Google event looks like :)

  • I'm not sold on the shoes either :(  Unfortunately finding shoes is harder than clothes b/c I wear a 12 which means, generally, ordering online.  I found a pair I like on Nordstrom but they aren't in stock.  Oh well.

I do have a pair of dressy flats I LOVE and never get to wear but they are purple....so that means a different top/outfit.
  • In RE: To LaneBryant ... why do they make so many sleeveless "big girl" tops. Come on! Don't they know that one of our biggest issues is flabby upper arms. For real?

They're probably closer to suit pants.  Thing is, my regular work dress isn't suits, it's jeans, so it's more dressy than that.  LOL.

    A. FREAKING. MEN.  Trickey.  Amen.

All fat girls want to wear sleeveless tops and let their arm flab flap in the breeze.  or wear dolman sleeved mu-mus to accentuate how wide we are.  Obvs.

I've never shopped there, but I just looked at the site when that link was posted and that is depressing.

I ALWAYS wear cardigans over tanks, and you would think for a store that caters to size 14 plus that they would have more options to eliminate having to buy the cardigan that usual covers most of the shirts cuteness. Or at least have an understanding that our arms have width, girth, and are not found attractive by anyone, especially the person buying said shirt so here's a thought, lets make shirts with normal sleeves!

Man - this is raising my blood pressure.

  • first I am jealous that you have those flats--I have been lusting after them.

I think you will look fine. Let the single ladies go all out-go and have fun!

Why do you think I had my wedding dress specially made with sleeves :)

I agree with this. I think a dressier top would be nice. What about a sequin tank with a cardi over it?  Maybe the purple one with your purple shoes? And chunky jewelry. To me, the look you have is business casual, not semi formal.

At the same time, I don't think what you have will be frowned upon. I just don't think it's quite the right look.
