iPhone users re: battery life

I have the 3G and am going to be upgrading in two weeks but DH wants to take my current phone and the battery on it is just terrible. For example, it had a full charge two hours ago and it's already down to 70%, but I've only used it once for about 30 seconds to check my email. Then yesterday, I went to a movie and I actually turned the phone totally off with 40% battery left. When I turned it back on after the movie, it was down to 19%. I didn't even know it was possible for a battery to drain when the phone was powered down?

Has anyone had this issue or know of a fix? Up until about a month ago, I only had to charge my phone at night and it was fine throughout the day. Now I have to charge it constantly.

Do you have a lot of push notifications or location services selected as "on" in your settings? If your phone is constantly reaching out to your email server to check for emails, that will drain your battery life while the phone is on. Do you close out of all of your apps that you are not using? Try clicking your "home" button twice quickly. On the bottom of the screen, your open applications will show. Hold your finger on one of the apps until they wiggle and once they do, click the little red minus sign for each app and it will close the app so that this way it isn't always running in the background. This will also help your battery life if you have an app that has push notifications enabled.

If your battery is draining while it is off, it's obviously not holding a charge and it sounds like the battery is simply going bad.  The 3G is an older phone and so I'm sure the battery is probably going bad. Also know that there have been many OS updates and I know the current OS is a lot of 'work' on the 3G phones in order to keep up.

  • Also, do you have the phone searching for wi-fi? That drains the battery significantly.  Sounds counter intuitive, but powering on the phone drains the battery.
  • Thanks ladies. The majority of my push notifications were already off but I turned a couple more off to see what will happen. I had a lot of open apps at the bottom so I closed all of those. I always have the wi-fi off unless I am intentionally using a network. We?ll see what happens but I?m pretty sure the battery is just shot. When I get my new phone, DH will be switching from the original iPhone to my current phone. I think the original iPhone holds a better charge than my current phone which is just crappy!

holy *** this must be  why my battery was draining so crazy!

  • Even things like the back light and brightness can make your battery die quicker. It sucks that it's every little setting. Sometimes things you don't even thing about like the dimmer time setting and all.

I think that was the main issue for me too (although I hate to call it early). It's been almost an hour and a half and I'm at 93% charge. I feel like it could be better but that seems much more acceptable.

Yeah leaving the apps open keeps them running in the background even though you think you are closing out of them by going back to your home screen. Hopefully your batteries will get a little more life out of them with doing this. You may not realize it but some of those apps are always throwing data back to the servers and back to your phone constantly even if you have push notifications off. Fully closing the app will help with this and I hope it works for you gals.

For reals!!! I never knew about this! I saw the 4 come up, but I thought it was your 4 most recent. I  didn't know there were tons of them hiding.

  • ever since the new iOs update my battery has been horrible... and I do close out my apps all the time.  I think there may be some kind of glitch too (although closing the apps will certainly help as will turning off location services, that kills it)
