Afghanistan (AP) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai is pardoning an Afghan woman serving a 12-year prison sentence for having sex out of wedlock after she was raped by a relative.
Karzai's office also said the woman and her attacker agreed to marry. That would reverse an earlier decision by the woman, who had previously refused a judge's offer of freedom if she agreed to wed the rapist.
Thursday's statement says Karzai decided to forgive the rest of the woman's sentence after hearing from judicial officials. It's not clear how much time the woman has served.
Her plight was highlighted in a documentary blocked by the European Union because it feared the women profiled would be endangered by its release.
More than 5,000 people signed a petition urging Karzai to release her.
Re: Remember what I said about razing the middle east to the ground?
So the best solution to these women's suffering under oppression is for Kuus to obliterate them? Or perhaps you would prefer someone else obliterate them on your behalf.
well, we're getting *closer* here and until a generation ago (more recently) spousal rape wasn't considered a crime in most of the US (still have more than enough asshats who think it isn't).
People can overcome, given time. People can also become worse asshats, given time.
When I see thinks like cardio striptease and thongs for girls becoming a norm here, I'm not entirely convinced that we shouldn't be razed, too.
*eying the deadlines post below*
Add China to the list.
I'm actually on the warpath against New Zealand at the moment. We are just having case after case of horrific child abuse cases, and apparently we have the 3rd worst rates for killing our own kids.
Chunks of our society should just be fire-bombed.
lurker coming out just to point out that Afghanistan is not in the Middle East. Unless you take the Bush "Greater Middle East" position, where he groups in lots of random, mostly Muslim countries to make our "enemy" seem so much larger. In which case, somehow Kazakhstan and Georgia also count.
In any event, I think you'd get further with your plan if you started with Saudi Arabia so that they couldn't keep funding their fundamentalist madrasas that are spreading this crap everywhere.
