Re: christmas trees
We might head to Linvilla on Sunday to cut one down. We have had great luck with our trees, I just water them every three days or so.

We are getting ours this weekend.
When buying the tree, lift it up and drop it back down to the ground and see if any needles fall off. If a lot of needles come off, move on to another tree. Also, just be really diligent about keeping it watered.

We buy home depot and lowes trees. They are just fine. We can't justify 75 for a tree thats already dead. I think we might do produce junction this year.
We got one last weekend. We bought a frazier fir (sp?) because they hold their needles longer. I've been watering it every day since that's what the tag said to do.
We decided to get a little one since our living room is dwarfed already by our furniture.. this tree is shorter than I am, which is only 5'4. Oh well!
thanks for the tip, never heard of the sugar. i will give it a try
We got a fake tree last year because Tommy is a bit mischievous and I didn't want him chewing, jumping on it or drinking the water out of the stand. He is seriously that crazy lol. Our tree is up already and we put it up this past weekend. I'm hoping if I leave it up for a week before decorating it he might get over his fascination with it and not attack the ornaments.
When we used to get a real tree we would shake it and check to see how many needles go to the ground and when I was growing up we would get it drilled and then stuff the hole with cotton.
I never heard of sugar, but I have heard about using a can of sprite (which has sugar in it).
I'm jealous of everyone's real trees! We are going to FL for Christmas, so decided to put up our fake tree. It's our tradition to do it Thanksgiving weekend, so it's already up. Last year our real tree lasted from Thanksgiving through New Years, and didn't lose many needles at all. I put in a couple of those packets that come with flowers, I have no idea if that helped or we just got lucky.
I've heard that sugar, sprite, or bleach can help keep your tree nice. I think DH watched a mythbusters episode testing each one but I have no idea what they found.
Also when you buy it make sure they cut a slice off of the bottom of the trunk, preferably at a slight angle (like with cut flowers) and then drill a hole in the center, this will assist in drawing water up into the tree.
We've been happy with the trees that are sold in front of ESP. They've done better than some fresh ones that we've gone and cut down. I'm not sure how spendy they are but it never seemed outrageous to me. They're also really nice and helpful. I hope they're back this year - haven't been through that section of Fairmount since tree season began.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Mine's up... because it's fake. And it's tiny. It's actually a little wrought iron "tree" with 4 levels of hooks. We use it to display the ornaments people give us. Someday when we have a house we'll get a big fake one.
My parents have an unhealthy obsession with getting the perfect real tree. We used to live in CT and they drive up there to get one every year. They also HAVE to cut their own. The stress this caused for my entire adolesence has me put off of every cutting or maintaining my own live tree.
