Yo, JM! Please come in!

What's the weather like in Iowa early Sept?

I am doing a triathlon in Iowa Sept. 2nd of next year and I am curious about what to expect with the weather.

Re: Yo, JM! Please come in!

  • Hi RP.  If I remember this past year it was nice...mid to high 70's.  Most years though in can be hot and humid.

Are you doing the Hy-vee Trialthalon?

  • That sounds like perfect tri weather!

Yup, I am doing the Hy-vee tri! Smile

Awesome.  I know a couple peeps who do that every year, pretty big event.  I would love to do that tri but I am not a good swimmer...maybe I just need to challenge myself..hahaha.

  • You definitely SHOULD challenge yourself.

A year ago, at this time, the BF wasn't even able to swim 4 laps without his legs cramping and in October, he and I did an Olympic tri together!

You totally have enough time to get swim practice in to compete!!

  • I might...lol.

What made you want to come to IA for a tri?

  • I qualified for it in the triathlon I did back in October.  Apparently, the Hy-vee is a championship triathlon? Or at least that's what they said.

Since I qualified for the Hy-vee, I paid a reduced race registration fee and if I place top 5, I can win $$.

Yes it is a huge deal.  People from all over the world come here to compete.  You must be a stud!!!  Hahaha

  • Ha ha! Guess so!  I am really going to be training pretty hard for it. My least strong portion is the bike and since October, I can already comfortable go 2 MPH faster than I did during the race.

My goal is to knock off 20-25 minutes of my time. I think it is totally doable.

Know of any good hotels in the area?  How early do you think I should book?

    What is your goal time?

Des Moines area has all the usual hotels....Embassy Suites, Sheraton, Marriot..etc.  I would book EARLY..prob next spring.

Also the winner of the male and female elite divisions both won $151,500...plus they received an additional $5100 bonus for every lap that they lead.  Good lord I didnt know it was that huge!!!

  • Well, my goal time is 2:30 (that's pushing it) but I would be happy if I did it in less than 2:39 (I think that was the 5th place female age grouper last year).

For the tri in October, I wasted a lot of time in my transition, because I accidentally ran to the Sprint transition area instead of the Olympic transition area. So, if I can knock off the time on my bike, run a tad faster, swim a tad faster and go to the right transition area then I really think it is doable!!
