Rehabs in Rock + Orange

Any yays or nays about these places:

Tolstoy in Valley Cottage -- Pine Valley in Spring Valley -- Nyack Manor in Valley Cottage --Northern Metropolitan in Monsey -- Elant in Goshen -- Park Manor in Middletown -- The Valley View Center in Middletown -- Friedwald Center in New City -- Northern Manor Geriatric Center in Nanuet ---->> we are trying to stay in Rockland as its easiest for my mom to stay with me since she doesn't drive but it's also dependent on where accepts my dads insurance.  We are pushing for Helen Hayes but were told "they don't like patients from Sloan".  Sorry for the blob of a msg I'm posting from my iPad.  Thankssss!!!

Re: Rehabs in Rock + Orange

  • not a friedwald house fan - personal experience with my grandmother. she wasn't in rehab - she was in the nursing home/care facility.

i think i've heard good things about Northern Metropolitan in Monsey - but i am not 1000% sure.

  • Definatly keep pushing for Helen Hayes...had only excellent experiences there.

I really don't now much about the others, but my Great Grandma spent some time at that one in Nanuet (northern manor) and I don't remember it being great. But that was back in the 1990's.

  • ya know...there's another one right here in Montvale NJ, about 10 minutes from us, but I can't remember the name of it. My aunt spent some time there and I think she was very happy. I'll try to find the name for you. I googled and got nothing.

  • I've heard better things about Valley View than the other ones you listed in orange county, including Elant and Park Manor.  We get (and send) a lot of patients to all of these places so my opinion is purely based on what I hear from patients and their families.
  • Thanks Melanie,  Friedman got 3 outta 5 stars so was a bit down our list.  Northern metropolitan was 4.

Lisa that would be great if you could find out the name and you totally reminded me to ask about places in Bergen tomorrow.

I'm going to see what I can do about Helen Hayes... He isn't on any 'cancer' related meds, all he takes are high blood pressure stuff which he's been on for years and his only side effect is fatigue otherwise you'd never know.  The wife of the man in the room with him was saying nowhere would take her husband because of the liability of all the meds he is on so we shall see cause that's not the case with my dad.

  • Definitely keep trying to push for Helen Hayes. I worked there for a few years and it far surpasses the other places you mentioned. I did some per diem work at Friedwald a few years back and didn't like it. I also worked per diem at Nyack Manor, but they used to be part of the Northern group and it looks like they're an independent facility now, so I'm not too sure. Back then it seemed pretty decent. Check out these sites to get info on the facilities:

  • Thanks Mellie, I was on the ourparents site earlier but will check out the other.

  • i dont know a lot about this- but my mom was in helen hayes a few years ago.  it ended up being a pretty quick stay but the place was fantastic.  it was actually her pick too, she is a nurse and did the research and swears that place is the best.

  • Like all the ladies said, Helen Hayes all the way!  Don't stop pushing.  My Dad has MS and last summer, he fell and broke his leg.  Breaking his leg was the best thing for him because they sent him to Helen Hayes and he was walking better than before his broken bones!!!  Unfortunately, he didn't keep it up and his MS has gotten worse but that's another story.  I definitely want him to go back.

  • I agree about pushing for Helen Hayes.  My bias toward Northern Manor is because of my ex-step-monster works there.  My Uncle was there before he passed away, I know they did their best to take care of him.
  • heard AMAZING things about Helen Hayes...

ney- for Nyack Manor in Valley Cottage.  i haven't hear good things about this place.
