S/O calling in sick...How many sick days do you get?

At my past two previous jobs I got 10 and 12.  I get 4 now, and I don't get them for 6 months.  I don't feel like that is very many especially because I have Crohn's Disease and get chronic sinus infections.  I only called in sick one day at my last job in 1.5 years, so that was pretty good...but I'm nervous I'll get sick this winter and not have any days to use.

Re: S/O calling in sick...How many sick days do you get?

  • We have unlimited sick days.  We get 1 personal day per year, we can bank up to 3, but they are very limited in what you can use them for, so people just call in sick.  I think with teaching it's a bit different because half the time it's more work to be stay home and write sub plans than it would be just to suck it up and go to work.
  • I get 10 sick days a year that roll over if I don't use them (accumulates up to 99 days) and 2 personal days that do not roll over. I can use 8 of my sick days for family illness (we have to enter a reason for absence when we call in on the automated system).

4 days DEFINITELY doesn't seem like very many -- I would have used those up when B had that virus 3 weeks after school started (I'd be screwed for the rest of the year!)! I assume you have a separate bank for vacation days? Can you use those days in an emergency?

  • 5 personal days and 2 weeks vacation which can be used for whatever.  It sucks balls, IMO.  I'll get another week when I hit 5 years but that's another year away.  For wanting to be so "family friendly" MoO sure has a sh!ttastic way of showing it.  I used every single one of those personal days for Evan's illness, not my own.

  • We get 3 weeks vacay and if we are sick, it's assumed that we are to make up the time at some point, so it doesn't really "count" against us.  I was sick last Monday, but the work did not stop and I easily made up for the missed hours.
  • Right now I have accumulated 7 weeks vacation and 6 weeks of sick leave. It's pretty insane....mostly since I feel too guilty to ever take time off, so I can't accumulate anymore until I use some of it up! :)

  • We get 9 sick each year and 3 personal "anytime" days you must request a week in advance.  The sick accumulate to 50 and than you start losing the extra and at the end of every year whatever personal days you have left we get paid out 50 dollars/day.  Mind you a sub they would pay to cover my class probably would make around $140 dollars a day, if I take that personal day.  If its family who is ill, we can use those 50 days for that but they really frown upon us using "sick" days for doctor's appts. as we can do that outside of school hours so easily (HAHAHA).  Also, we have a "sick" bank that you can donate a day every year in for someone who runs out of time in case of emergency (someone's father is dying and you help take care of them, etc.) and I don't even know where a funeral falls under as its bereavement leave and I don't think qualifies for either if its a immediate family member but maybe it counts as a sick day.  I guess I haven't had to worry except for a couple of uncle's funerals and I have never come close to running out of days to know the procedures better.

I am a teacher so it probably is a little different (as someone else said, you don't want to be gone, it takes more effort to be gone than to actually be there unless you can show a video LOL!)

  • I earn 13.33 hours of PTO every month, PTO is to be used for sick time, personal appointments, personal days and vacation.
  • I get none, because I am on-call, but even as a part-time employee it was 0.

DH- gets 0 sick days, 0 vacation days, 0 holidays. It blows.

  • 96hrs a year.....so 12 days.

Oh and they roll over if we don't use them. We can use vacation time as sick if we really need too. We can also use sick time for kids. Also-if we are out of time, we can just take the time, and make it up by skipping lunches or whatever.

None. Absolutely nothing. He works as an engineering draftsman. Unfortunately, he just happens to be employed at a company that consists of 3 people including him. He has his resume out but nothing yet. :(

  • We can accumulate up to 1044 hours which calculates to 130 days which is 26 weeks.  Then if you retire at UNMC you get paid a portion of your accrued sick time (25%).

Depending on the department, you can use for kids and for yourself.  Unfortunately, mine you can only use for yourself....which stinks but I hope to change my bosses mind.

We accumulate so much because you use your sick leave for FMLA purposes.  Right now, I only have a week because I used 2 months for FMLA last spring.

Once you hit a year and if your company is under FMLA guidelines, see if your Crohn's disease can be covered under FMLA so if you have to be out and do not have sick leave, you are protected under FMLA as an upaid employee.

  • We can't use any of our days for sick kids.  If a kid has a dr's appt, we can use a personal day, so again, everyone just lies about it and uses sick days for kids.  According to our union president, our district cannot question our sick or personal day usage though, so we never have to prove anything.
  • I get 3 SW days per year.
  • Wow. After reading this I feel really good about my paid time off. We get 11 days per year to use as needed. We don't have to justify anything. We just say, "I'll be gone" and that's it. If we're going to be gone on the day before a vacation or after a vacation (the last day of school before Christmas, the day we get back from spring break, etc.) we have to ask for special permission just so they don't have more than 15% of any staff gone - also so there are enough subs. For me that's not a problem and I totally see the reasoning behind it.

I feel guilty calling in but that's because I hate having others do my work. I hate leaving my kids because they typically don't do well with subs. I feel like it sets them up for a bad day. :-( No problem from the higher ups anymore now that we have a new principal who is super rockin.

  • wth is you supposed to do!?!?

Sorry Johnny, you are puking all over, mommy's gotta go to work fend for yourself!

I don't have set sick days. If I am sick or need to be gone then I am.   I also do not get paid time off so that bites.
