Wicker Laundrey Basket.... smells

I picked up a nice-looking basket hamper from Home Goods.  Looks great and was surprisingly inexpensive at $30.  It even comes with a canvas laundry bag liner.

The problem is that whatever material the hamper is made from actually SMELLS.  I mean... I know its the wicker... But a house guest might just assume there is some super stinky laundry in there. Which is not the case and embarassing.

I don't feel like returning it.  Maybe I should have upgraded to a better basket material.  Maybe there is a special kind of air freshener that I can drop in there?

Help me cheat on this one ladies :)  Thanks!

Re: Wicker Laundrey Basket.... smells

  • both great ideas!  I will prob need to try a combo of both!

     Very helpful, thank you!

Ultimately, I think the manufacturer used a lesser grade wicker that just has a funny smell to it.  Not chemicals... a sort of wood of some kind I think.  I was wondering why it was so inexpensive!

if airing out / fresheners don't work, I might just repurpose it to the garage and use it out there for something.  Then suck it up, spend the darn 60 bucks and get a nice hamper! LOL

    too funny... thanks again!

  • I'd try some Febreze too...

  • I've sprayed mine down with Lysol before. I pretty much drench the thing in Lysol spray then sit it in a sunny spot to "dry out." It works for me. :)
  • I always stuff dryer sheets inbetween the wicker and liner to avoid any smells... seems to help! Honestly, I wouldn't buy a wicker one again myself because they all fall apart.
